Specialising in East African cuisine, Restaurant Azmarino is set in the Pijp district of Amsterdam, near to Sarphatipark and the famous Albert Cuyp market. Dishes at this Amsterdam restaurant are based largely on Ethiopian and Eritrean cuisine, with meat dishes of differing strengths of flavour featuring heavily. All are served with vegetables and 'enjera', a typical sourdough pancake. Here, you also eat the traditional way - with only your hands. Also typical of East Africa is the beer, served in a gourd. Arguably one of the more unusual restaurants in Amsterdam, Restaurant Azmarino offers a little taste of Africa in the heart of the city.

This was my first time eating Ethiopian food and it was a nice experience. This restaurant is very close to my house so I intend on going there again :) I am a vegetarian and there are multiple options here. The chickpeas dish is great. For indians, these dishes may resemble some of ours dals or lentil sabzis. The staff... More

The wife and I took a trip to Amsterdam. The choice for dinner that evening was either staying and having dinner in our 5 star hotel, or trying Azmarino. The wife (who I wanted to keep sweet) opted for Azmarino. I was not keen (eating with my hands), and I've never tried Ethiopian or Eritrean food. We arrived and were... More

I had researched many places to eat in Amsterdam and came across this one. I haven't had Ethiopian cuisine before and was curious to try it out. The reviews seemed positive and I'd thought I would give it a shot. My sister and I tried a combination of the various items on the menu and they were delicious and the... More

For our last day in Amsterdam we were looking for a original dining place and came across this lovely Ethiopian restaurant which left us speechless. After entering the restaurant, the waitress asked us if we had Ethiopian food before and explained how you eat it and what it'll be like. We ordered Mango beer (divine!) which came with little fake... More

What a lovely Ethiopian restaurant off the beaten path. We seemed to be the only tourists there; most others were speaking Dutch. The food was delicious and affordable for our family of four. We spent about 55 euros for four main dishes, a glass of wine, a pineapple juice, and a dessert that our daughters shared. (Desserts are Dutch, not... More

Turned up 30mins before opening time (Guardian got it wrong) but the owner was very friendly and let us in anyway. Great, filling and tasty dish to share, we mixed the lamb and chickpea dish, it wasn't spicy as some earlier reviews said. We finished the lot between the two of us

Staying in De Pijp

Neighborhood Profile
De Pijp
Bustling Albert Cuypstraat serves as the main drag through De Pijp and the location for Albert Cuyp Market, the largest and most famous of Amsterdam’s many outdoor markets. Beyond this sometimes-frantic thoroughfare, tiny lanes beckon urban explorers in search of the latest trends and hidden gems. Nearly half the residents living in De Pijp are foreigners and a good number of them are students. Here you'll find a multitude of ethnic restaurants, great cafes and bars, and a brilliant array of locally owned shops, all catering to a broad range of budgets and tastes.
