Amazingly fresh pickled herring and eel! Best ever

Holland is famous for its pickled herring. We made sure we had some prior to our departure. It was the best ever. Usually the amount of vinegar is too much for me, not this time. It was so fresh. We visited Rob for a break during our city tour! Following his advice we ate a gorgeous haring sandwich! Bob is a big and great (nothern) sea man!

The place to go for a herring, eel and other fishy stuff. Friendly service, freshly prepared albeit in humble surroundings. Have been going every year for decades

We enjoyed having a quick lunch here. The quality of the fish was tremendous and we loves the atmosphere of the place. Would mostly recommend the herring sandwich.

This is a great place to have a quick snack while hanging around the Dam square. Clientele consists of locals and informed tourists. The guy that works behind the counter makes it up for the lack of space by creating a cheerful atmosphere. The simple herring sandwich is very good, but I would also recommend smoked eel (paling).

The staff were very friendly and had a good sense of humour. The 3 of us ordered 3 differently marinated herring with bread a 2 slices of pickle. None are worth raving about. Scandinavians do a hell of a better job with herring.

We've found this place "accidentally" yet it is so easy to find coming from Damrak!! The owner is the nicest person in whole city I guess :) The place is small yet very cosy. You can choose from many types of fish, which names I don't remember, but what I do remember is the taste..... OMG.... fresh, soft, perfectly cooked/... More

What others have said is true - the guy running this place is very friendly. The salted herring on a roll with onions and gherkins (the Dutch hamburger) was excellent - fresh and tasty. We also had kibbling (cod) which was reheated and not so good. Go for the salted herring and resist the others and you won't be disappointed.... More

Went here based on recommendations here on ta and don't regret it one bit. The herring sandwich is a pleasant surprise. Was a bit skeptical at first as he herring is fresh (uncooked) but it was so good. Not fishy at all. A must try in Amsterdam.
