delightful traditional bar

Found this place wandering around the Jordaan and loved the character of the place - great guy behind the bar and good choice of beers on tap. It was nice to sit and watch the world go by and could have sat otuside in January as it was sunny. Steps to the toilet are very steep and curve round so... read more

I stumbled upon De Vergulde Gaper while wandering the Jordaan area looking for a nice place to spend a relaxing evening. I hit the jackpot. The corner restaurant has a very cozy, but not overcrowded atmosphere. Interesting apothecary decorations still line the muted walls. Friendly English-speaking staff tend the seats and the bar. The quirky architecture lends to the experience.... More

We had some time to kill between stops and decided to stop here for some red wine as an aperitive. Nice atmosphere, friendly waitresses and a good bottle of Merlot made this one of the most memorable experiences of our trip. Would visit again.

Nice bar, would have been nicer if service was better, but they were really crowded when we went, so it can happen. Food and drinks were OK, nothing great but neither bad.

I stumbled on this place after visiting Anne Frank House (which is well worth a visit). I ended up people watching and watching the world go by from this place. Very cosy with a lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. If I go back to Amsterdam, would love to go back to this place.

We walked around the area looking for a place to eat and came across this place. It was so nice. Atmosphere was excellent, very cozy. Food was excellent also, and had good drinks to choose from.

Have been coming here for about 5 years anytime I'm in the city. Love the staff, food and location. Weather permitting, you can eat outside. If that doesn't work, the restaurant is very cozy. They always have several specials of the day. You can't go wrong with their soups. And the french fries are wonderful!! If you use the "facilities",... More

Been here several times. Great location. A bit dark and dingy inside. Food is good. Service is consistently bad - innattentive and slow. Order coffee and cake and they never arrive together - cake arrives long after coffee is finished or cold. They really are clueless in this place. After several visits today was my last.

Located in a nice canal corner. Very good food at reasonably prices. The only waiter was nice and helpfull, however, as it was getting later, the movement turned out to be too much for him to handle by himself and service got a little too slow. Nevertheless, we reccomend it because of the quality meal.
