Remember, it IS Switzerland

I spent a good couple of hours searching for restaurants in Basel known for their fondue. I realize it's a bit cliche but my wife and I just wanted to have fondue on our one day in Switzerland. You are likely to pass this restaurant if you are walking to the city center from the train station, so... read more

This place was recommended by our hotel as excellent for local Swiss specialties. We had a raclette, which is really just melted, flavoured cheese and boiled potatoes, plus a meat dish. The preceding salads were unremarkable, and we did not stay for dessert. What was remarkable were the prices. At over 35 Swiss Francs for a main, this amounts to... More

We've read many good things about this place and also a couple of locals recommended it for good typical Swiss cuisine. The food was not bad at all although way too pricey for what it is. The lady (who spends most of the time behind the bar) is extremely kind and friendly, but the old guy (I guess the owner... More

Came here in 2013, but never got to post a review. I had the steak au poivre and a nice glass of house red wine. It was such a wonderful meal. Great service. Perfect and cozy place for dining alone. I have just recommended this to my colleague visiting Basel this week, and felt like I should post a positive... More

We called early in the morning to book a table for 2. Once we got there, we had to share a table with another couple already sitting there! They were surprised, so did we! It was awkward for the whole dinner. There were plenty of empty tables so we didn't understand it. We ordered fondue which was really good. Then... More

Although it is a very small restaurant, and not very attractive prima facie, the fondue was very good and one of the cheapest of Basel. The staff was nice, smiling and welcoming. I have seen some other comments...and if you pay attention to the card, you can see that potatoes are extra...so I think that people who had the feeling... More

Very bad experience, we felt cheated. We booked the restaurant for a larger group of people. The first bad surprise was when we arrived to find out that the best places in the restaurant are taken. It was supposed to be a private event. We had to wait until the other guests get their food. Clear cheat on us. The... More

The Fondue is good but they don't inform you that you will have to pay extra for the potatoes and extra for the cornichons. They offer you a schnap, we accept it, as included in the price because it is not in the menu and finally it is also extra charged. Result: extremely high invoice and, on top, after complaining... The fondue at Elsbethenstubli is the best we've had in Basel. This is a small restaurant with only 10 or so tables. It's best if you can make a reservation, but we have come with just two of us and been seated. It may mean sharing a table with a complete stranger, but this (we've come to find) is completely... The Fondue at Elsbethenstubli was simply delicious. The Field lettuce salad was very good too but the Fondue was terrific. Caution to Americans: You may have to share your table with complete strangers, which my husband and I were conscripted to do. We initially sat with an older couple, who had already finished their dinner when we arrived. We wished... More
