As unpretentious as a restaurant could get away with. The setting is beyond basic but the food is so simple, delicious and homely , you would want to go back again and again. Their three specialities are the traditional florentine steak, the butter chicken , and the artichoke flan. I suggest ordering the flan to share with some beans and... More

We researched many local restaurants for our trip and Trattoria Sostanza was rated high on Trip Advisor. There is a reason for that....it was outstanding ! We made our reservations (for 5) about a week prior to visiting Florence and it was a good thing we did. Our host was tuning walk-in's away telling them they needed to make a... More

Not fine dining, just good food. You might wind up at a table with others even if you have a reservation. We say that the florentine steak was so rare that my wife would not eat it, so we had the butter chicken, pasta al sugo (meat sauce) and white beans. Nothing fancy here, just good quality ingredients, prepared simply.... More

We arrived within minutes of the restaurant opening, and it was a good thing, because we didn't have reservations. While there, we watched them turn people away. The food was out of this world. The chicken with butter was delicious. Simple, yet tasty. The tortellini was so good, we ordered more. When the waiter asked if we wanted dessert, we... More

Trattoria Sostanza is one of the oldest restaurants in Florence and is a classical institution. Several previous visits have been memorable. Coming back this time nothing has changed, and we felt for the 1st time some stagnation here. Of particular concern was that most dishes were too salty, and this included the artichoke omelette as well as the buttered chicken.... More

I have been to Firenze over 100 x for work and eaten here every visit. Even alone, I had to! It's quite old and small. Try to reserve but sometimes must wait. The tables are groups so you may be sat with others but conversation can flow or not, as you wish. The decor doesn't change, the staff has been... More

Best restaurant we ate at in Italy. All the food was delicious, like the lemon chicken and bistecca. The staff couldn't have been friendlier. Cash only.

I had to make an overseas call at 8 am Eastern 3 weeks prior just to make sure my family gets to eat here during our trip to Florence. It was worth all the trouble. Everything we ordered was consistently good but I would recommend their artichoke torte, bistecca (the best we had), butter chicken, roast veal, mushroom and spinach... More

Hard to believe a place can actually exceed its incredible reviews. Sostanza did for sure. Staff was super friendly. The Bisteca was fabulous and the butter chicken off the charts. Strawberry meringue dessert was equally great. The price was very reasonable for quality and portion size. Don't miss it

Staying in Santa Maria Novella

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Maria Novella
Santa Maria Novella train station welcomes the majority of the people arriving in Florence, which might explain the hectic pace. Commuters and tourists come across the constant hustle and bustle of the station before exiting, taking a few steps and stopping amazed in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. It is impossible not to admire the the square, housing one of the most charming basilicas in Florence. The area has plenty of local spots to taste Tuscan specialties, but don’t stop in the main streets alone; the narrower side streets always ensure satisfaction. The huge Parco Delle Cascine provides a solution to the need for a green area as well as a historic welcome in the form of a bronze statue of King Vittorio Emanuele II riding a horse.
