Okay.. Service to improve

Food was okay (4/5) But service definitely needs improvement. 4 different waiters took care of us -one for table, one for drinks, one for dishes, one for dessert, and then the bill by the second one- Waiting times were long, I had even to chase after the waiters on order to get the bill and got it... read more

Friendly staff with personality! Made for a pleasant change. Lovely lunch with wine in piazza with plenty going on around to entertain you. Quick and efficient.

We'd had such a great experience in every dining establishment we wandered into that we didn't think to be discerning. Big mistake. Having some time to kill before our train, we decided to have lunch in the beautiful square, and picked a table overlooking the square. One of the waiters ran up to us and told us not to sit... Went here for dinner with my wife whilst staying in Florence. After being told "2 minutes" for a table, we were finally seated about 20 minutes later after watching 5 other couples, who spoke Italian to the greeter, we were shown to a yet to be cleaned table. It took another 15 minutes for someone to clean and set the... More

Typical of a restaurant in a tourist strip. Waite staff didn't want to be there and couldn't give a damn. Menu is quite extensive with the odd catchy item such as wild boar ragu but we're a group of 5, all of whom had a different pasta dish and no one had a good word to say about any of... More

Really good spot for lunch - there is an ambulance station across the square, so at times perhaps not so quiet! Anyway, great views across Piazza di SMN, as there are gardens and the church. This helps with a relaxing feel to eating outside here. Usual cool sprays, which help in August. The area was busy and we'd only just... More

This is a great place to enjoy an outdoor meal in the middle of Piazza di Santa Maria Novella...or to enjoy a bottle of wine and people watch. The restaurant staff was very attentive and the outside patio had cool spraying misting machines to help beat the heat. We had spaghetti, penne, salad, caprese, bruschetta and chianti wine. Everything was... More

Very nice outside dining experience. Salads and Pizza were very good. Excellent wine prices. Tough to get seating because of the popularity. Service was a little slow but once they found us it moved along well. Excellent price/value relationship.

After walking around Santa Maria Novella we wanted to have a light lunch and found Il Grillo just across the square. The 4 pizzas we had were very good and the Florentine steak they were eating at the next table also looked wonderful. Good value.

We went here as it had a nice view. There ends the good points. The food was quite average and the staff are appealing. I felt the whole time like this could have been such a good meal!!

Staying in Santa Maria Novella

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Maria Novella
Santa Maria Novella train station welcomes the majority of the people arriving in Florence, which might explain the hectic pace. Commuters and tourists come across the constant hustle and bustle of the station before exiting, taking a few steps and stopping amazed in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. It is impossible not to admire the the square, housing one of the most charming basilicas in Florence. The area has plenty of local spots to taste Tuscan specialties, but don’t stop in the main streets alone; the narrower side streets always ensure satisfaction. The huge Parco Delle Cascine provides a solution to the need for a green area as well as a historic welcome in the form of a bronze statue of King Vittorio Emanuele II riding a horse.
