Great food

I've been a little bemused by the poor reviews of this place. Maybe it's a bit of an inconsistent restaurant, but all I can report is of our experience. We came here for something to eat just before going to the Opera (it's a 2 minute walk to St Marks Anglican Church). We unfortunately didn't... read more

We were looking for some nice place to have dinner and ended up in this osteria. The place looks nice, it is located in a wine cellar and is quite romantic. The food and wine were really good. WE tried the 3 types of pasta. The staff was indifferent to anything but the football game that was running.

This place was recommended by a family member, and it was a great atmosphere for our last night in Florence. The food was authentic, the service was good, and it's well worth one of your dinners in Florence. The wine of course was pretty awesome!

We stumbled upon Il Cantione by chance on a rainy Friday night and could not have been more pleased. While the waiter did ask if we were ready just a moment or two after we sat down -- something I see many others on this site have complained about -- we didn't mind, as that seems to be the custom... a dark place which I had visited many years ago. Found the service a bit sloppy. When I ordered crostini instead of the pate being on round pieces of toasted bread, it was in a dish accompanied by a ton of hard as nails bread cut too thick where only the middle was eatable as the rest was so hard... A menu card on the street directs you to an authentic Tuscan culinary experience... Instead poorly-managed kitchen work posing authentic Tuscan means the unsuspecting tourist looking for the real thing is ripped off & worse---he or she departs Firenze with a negative opinion about one of the world's great food traditions. Shame on the proprietors!! Our shared first course of... More

We have dinner at Il Cantinone each time we visit Florence. On the Oltrarno side, close to Ponte Vecchio, its a small cosy osteria with great food and reasonable prices. The inside looks like it was a former wine cellar. Try the Papa Pomodoro (soup) thats a meal in itself.

To best way to describe this dining experience would be to use words like rude and incompetent for the service and unimpressive, for the food. When we were first seated, even though the restaurant was barely a third full, the waiter stood, noticeably impatient, while we reviewed the menu and placed our food orders. We ordered wine and appetizers to... More

We had reservations around the corner at a very-hip venue. We canceled and just started walking to find a place for dinner. We stopped at two doorways, one up and one down. We chose the door leading down....a great decision. Once downstairs, the dinning room is in a vaulted celling room crammed full of people (the one upstairs had no... More

We visited Il Cantinone last night with friends. We were escorted to our table without a smile or so much as a hello. The waiter stood over our shoulder waiting for us to order. We ordered our wine and said we would order later. He took our order and I ordered the "chef's 3 pasta special". When I asked about... More
