We went there because we read so many great reviews here that we thought we couldn't miss it. The food was ok but not as great as we expected. The place is interesting and the people was friendly. And I would not recommend going here for a dinner, but for a lunch or a snack.

We visited this restaurant one evening as we'd had a big lunch and heard that it was good for snack type food. We were immediately put off by the glass counters of pizza slices and tray bakes of food sitting there waiting for reheating in the microwave. Unfortunately we found this to be quite common in Palermo but just around... More

Our first day in Sicily, staying in east Palermo, we asked a young man in a store we'd stopped to shop in where we could have dinner nearby without being surrounded by tourists groups. We asked him to send us to a place the locals ate and since it was a warm night, preferrably outside. He sent us to what... More

We went here on a recommendation from a local and were sure she was mad at us. The service was poor, the place has no ambiance (it is a cafeteria), and the food was poor and served cold. We went for early dinner (around 6pm). On another day, we walked by during lunch and they were serving outside. It seemed... More

Antica Focacceria San Francesco serves wonderful 'street food' for great great value, both indoor and outdoor (at lunchtime, in the square opposite the restaurant entrance). Their food isn't nouvelle cuisine of course; it's substantial good food as eaten by common people in Palermo: 'panelle' (chickpea fritters), 'crocchè' (potato croquettes), involtini di melanzana (eggplant rollups), panini with 'meusa' (boiled spleen), 'sfincione'... This place is a Palermo institution, and not to be missed. The ambiance is great and the perfect metaphor for the city itself, busy, a little messy, noisy and some times hard to navigate (check out the food, decide what you want, pay at the cash, go back and ask for your meal) but no trip to Palermo is complete... Impossible to know how you are supposed to go through the line or get beverages, but even though the Palermitans have that stand-offish tough guy demeanor, they are actually very kind and generous people. Ask them. Food is kind of cafeteria quality, but it is a Palermo institution for many reasons and in a cute small piazza. Worth a visit... More

We went to the Antica Focacceria on the advice of friends but should have eaten at the bar/cafe downstairs rather than upstairs. Food was fine but our meal was spoilt by a couple of things. Firstly, despite the fact that the restaurant was not full we were placed in an odd diamond arrangement in the centre of the room with... More

I liked the self-service and the price. It was also a charming old place and the courtyard outside was a nice place to sit and linger a while.
