Venetian Weekend

Sitting in St Marks square is quite magical and you can imagine the Roman Legions arriving. As you would expect the café is expensive and remember you will have to pay an extra 6 Euros per person to hear the music , but it is great to sit and watch all the different people walking by. At last - my wife finally relented. I've had my coffee in Florian, a standing joke between us. We sat inside - it was too wet, but that saved us €6 each for the music. Anyway, the ambience was lovely, with well turned-out and helpful waiters. We just had coffees, and a plate of their tasty biscuits, and it still... More

I loved this coffee house with all its tradition and charm. It is the oldest in Venice, dating back to around 1720. Music will serenade you as you watch the world go by. It was lovely sitting in St Mark's Square in front if the cafe when it was sunny, but personally I preferred the intimacy of the finely decorated... More

Although its a bit pricy, no trip to Venice would be complete, without sipping an hot chocolate or expresso, while sitting and listening to live music on the historic piazza San Marco. The Florian is the oldest coffee house in Venice. Once inside, you can almost imagine the romantic charm this place has. I would love to come back during... More

We knew it would be exorbitant, but the atmosphere, live classical music and silver service were worth it. My wife and I chose Florian's for coffee and dessert one evening. The signature dessert was the finest I have eaten in a restaurant, the coffee was excellent and my wife described her hot chocolate as the best in the world. The... More

Visit the cafe only for its historical value .It is the oldest in Venice .But dont expect any something extraordinaire. The furniture are very old and the waiters have a very snob look at you.If you decide to have a cup of coffee at thiw place dont wear a casual outfit because probably the waiters will treat you as a crook.... We were looking forward to finding Caffe Florian, and it is beautiful in its presentation, but therefore too expensive for us to enjoy. People were photographing the menu!!! Food was much more expensive here and you paid a surcharge because of the orchestra. Out of our league, but we enjoyed the embience from a distance.

The place is amazing, service is fast and waiters are so kind. But they take 6euro per person for the orchestra. Prices are so expensive but maybe it meets the feelings.

Cliche, cliche: go to Venice and fall in love. The Florian played a big part in creating that perfect moment for my fiancé to ask me a very difficult question that we both bumbled and mumbled around: will you marry me? Maybe it was the music, maybe it was the fact that our favorite authors like Goethe, Dostoyevsky, Proust, or... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
