Nice and inexpensive, just don't sit down ;)

Stand at the bar if you want a quick espresso or latte in St. Mark's Square. It only costs a few Euro if you stand. Fair priced pastries too. But if you order sitting at a table it's 30 Euros! I thought the barista was joking. 30 Euros for lovely live music outside and surrounded by wonderful... read more

My boyfriend and I visited Caffe Florian on 27th and 28th November and it quickly became our favourite place. Simply can't fault it - impeccable service, lovely setting, gorgeous decor, and the drinks and gelato were out of this world. It was a tiny bit pricier than some other cafes but they simply couldn't compare to Florian. In the two... More

It is a great place to sample the best of sweets and coffees in this historically important 'Caffe'! Try to be pampered whilst you come to Venezia. Life is too short to miss this amazingly charming place!

Very classy and atmospheric, this expensive caffe probably has a long history and deserves the money for its highly priced items. If you chose to sit at Saint Mark, this would be the place.

We stopped off for a light lunch while out sight-seeing. The setting is nice, right in St Marks Square, and there was a little orchestra playing outside where we were sitting. The waiters are attentive and the food is nice enough - we had some sandwiches and shared two desserts between three of us. But, oh my, it's expensive. As... More

The history of this place is its real attraction. Be prepared to pay 10€ for a coffee, but most Venician museums will charge you more than that. Take your time and fantasize how this place must have been back in 1720!

Walk on the steps of Goldoni, Lord Byron, Goethe, Casanova and Dickens who (amongst many others) used to be customers there. In business since 1720, Florian is an elite address. The coffee will cost you a fortune, even by Italian standards, but having a drink at that prestigious address is a unique and special experience if you are a coffee... More

Yes, the cafe is expensive - I don't think this is the point really. It is the history/experience. They opened their doors in 1720, patrons included Lord Byron, Claude Monet, more modern patrons - Charlie Chaplin etc. this is what you are going for - the experience and the most delicious Macarons. We had a delightful afternoon tea, the coffee... More

This café is in the middle of St Mark's Square. It offers coffee and a nice Italian environment. It is a must do while in Venice. We were there in November and it was not crowded at all. No lines.

There is no question the Caffe Florian is a landmark in St. Marks square. That said charging $10 for a cappuccino is offensive. That is called taking advantage of the everyday traveler. There are plenty of other smaller cafes that deserve our business and I for one would not return to thje Florian no matter the history.

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
