Do it at least once

Expensive, yes. But give it a go to say you've done it. We enjoyed our visit there and the beer was good. I'll never complain about the price of Guinness again, but I'll never get that view and listen to an orchestra like that in the UK.

It may be just our waiter......but one of the rudest persons I have ever met in hospitality. He was upset over another waiter seating us in his area and giving a table that he did not approve of and told us so and so asked us to move and share a table with another family. Finally got moved to another... More

It is a nice cafe with traditional settings, located right on St Marco Square. We had afternoon tea in the cafe. Originally, we wanted to sit outdoors, to enjoy the sun, the square and the orchestra. When we realised that the charge is €12 per pax for the orchestra, we moved indoors. It was an expensive afternoon tea for us,... More

This was on our list of touristy must do's during our recent visit to Venice. We chose to sit inside which was lovely and we were still able to hear the orchestra outside. We ordered Chocolate Casanova, chocolate hazelnut drinks and a plate of macaroons which were nice but nothing special. It was always going to be about the experience. Caffe... More

You can sit inside or take a table outside in the Square...do both...we would arrive before the hordes of tourists came to stand in the Square, we'd take a table, order a supeb breakfast and watch the people go by. Its one of a thousand places to people-watch but it has the history, the unadulterated style and panache that no... More

Excellent locations and views of the square whilst listening to the beautiful orchestra's that change through out the day every two hours or so. The food and drinks are very nice but be prepared for prices 3 to 4 times that off the square. Worth doing for the experience, the waiters are nicely dressed but treat you just like a... More

We give up breakfast at our hotel so we can say goodbye to Venice with a real luxury breakfast. The Piazza San Marco and its old cathedral full of tourists does not take away the charm to this beautiful caffé said to be the world's oldest. Well worth the visit and the breakfast. Expensive of course by very good.

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
