The restaurant " Do Forni " was founded in 1973 and is managing with passion by Mr.Eligio Paties. " Do Forni " is distributed in two adjacent rooms: a rustic elegant room setting with the imagery of the ancient Venetian restaurant and the other one called Orient Express, whose luxurious furnishings reproduce accurately the setting and the soul of the famous wagon train that connects Venice to Istanbul and Paris. The restaurant features traditional Venetian cuisine, mainly seafood, which offers fish and shellfish of the Adriatic according to recipes handed down by the Venice of the past centuries and embellished with seasonal vegetables and delicate sauces; but also the restaurant is known for a refined interpretation of the Venetian and Italian cooking that mixes the use of meats and local vegetables with the influence of international gastronomy. Very large and qualified is also the restaurant's wine cellar, that offers the best labels from all the Italian regions, the most prestigious French wines and champagnes as well as a wide selection of international products.

Good but pricy

The food was great, but the plating a disappointment given the prices. We had the soft shell crab; fried and served on a paper napkin. The other entre was the scallop with porcini; never seen a plate of scallops look that bland. The scallops were over cooked. For mains we had sea bream, cuttlefish... read more

Normally, I don't like to be extremely critical, but this restaurant is a class A scam. I was recommended this place by the concierge at my hotel and now I feel even he was part of this scam. I studied the prices on the menu and thought it is expensive, but just about affordable, so decided to go ahead and... More

We were recommended by hotel reception to this restuarant on our first night of 3 day visit...the quality was good but prices too high for the standards it represents on an international level. We had two courses with drink before and wine and water all came too 180 euros incl service ......but main courses were small fillets of sole. Service... More

This was full of locals eating fish. Can't believe they paid the same price as us. Our meal was awful and came to 160 euros. Italy meant to be bust. Go north along the Strada Novo where there are restaurants with better food at one third of the price.

We nearly missed this good restaurant because of too many negative reviews on Tripadvisor. Do Forni was recommended for fish by the concierge at Hotel Cristallo in Cortina. He was right! The fish, especially the sea bass and monk fish were outstanding. All the other food was great. Friendly service with all the usual small appetisers included. Price was about... More

Not always a famous restaurant is worth its name, I would say in most cases expectations are wrong! Especially in Venice! This is not the case of Do Forni, a place that is expensive, but you are in Venice after all, where nothing is cheap! So if you have to spend, at least spend well! Forget about fancy and 'cool'... Over priced for what it delivered. 2 people, 2 courses 1 bottle of cheaper wine and a 170 euro bill. The first courses, both pasta were OK but nothing special the mains were tough veal escallop and cuttlefish that had not been cleaned very well leaving you with grit with each mouthful. Avoid.

Very nice restaurant, great food ( good quality but quite small portions), friendly waiters: I would come back. We had a big table decorated with fruit and flowers in the middle: amazing! The bill was amazing too.....

We were recommended to go here by a local hotel barman. It looked like a great quality restaurant, great location as well. A stones throw from San Marco and don't they know it ! It was obvious that they treat tourists with contempt. They had fresh fish on display. We ordered sole, not a cheap fish and got fried fish... More

I am truly a world traveler. It cost over 280€ for a s@@t meal. Then to top it off the power went out and it took over 2 hours to get out of this dump. I work hard for my money and I can't imagine how this place stays in business. I would compar it to Denny's Resturaunt . The... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
