Good atmosphere and wine

This is a small bistro-type restaurant and wine bar which is popular with tourists. We had a reasonable meal and good wine, and the bill for three people was €125 which seemed fair for Venice where prices tend to be high. The main appeal of Enoiteca Mascareta is its atmosphere and friendly... read more

There are a lot of wine shop in Venice where you can have good food and wine for a cheap prize. This is NOT one of those. The owner choose the wine and food for you. And it is expensive. It is fun, true. He also sits and drink and eat with you. But YOU have paid the food and... More

This place combines great food (never realised sea bass or cuttlefish could be so delish) with a fun atmosphere and extensive wine list. We took European foodie friends, who were pleasantly impressed. Nice touches include being able to order any wine by the glass, with our waiter giving great advice on what to try. Mid priced for Venice. Save room... More

Distinctly average food. The restaurant is covered in characutures and pictures of the owner, who even has a picture of himself on the back of his waistcoat. It was busy, but we weren't blown away by the food.

Service is outstanding. The waiter is very attentive and will match your wine for you. Food was heavenly! Good value for money. I had oysters, marinated anchovies and cuttlefish in black ink which was a new experience for me.

Went here after a great dinner having read about it on trip advisor. A party of a dozen or so were in full swing at a large table which made for a lively and fun atmosphere. The owner was among them and knocking them back, as well as singing and dancing with gusto. Extensive choice of wines, relaxed and welcoming... More

Our B&B recommended this local restaurant. Small, intimate, friendly and fantastic food. We had the best Caprese salad ever, a tremendous squid pasta, beef cheeks and lamb shank. The wine was flowing and a dark grappa with our desserts. A similar dinner in my hometown would have cost twice as much.

There are no words to describe one of the best nights in my life. The food is incredible, risotto with crab, clams, fish and more fish...wine is own produced and incredible. Mauro made the night incredible and unforgettable. It was my partner's birthday and it was the best party ever. My friends and I were treated in such a good... More

Although we had a reservation and the door was open when we arrived around 7 pm, they sent us away because they were not ready. In such cases one would expect a short explaination and a drink for the time you have to wait. So in this case..we went somewhere else. Bad service!

We came here May last year and enjoyed every meal we had so when we stayed in Venice for one night during our honeymoon in October 2015 we came back! The restautant was fully booked for the evening but the owner said he could arrange a table for us within 15-20 minutes! He even offered us a glass of wine... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
