Description: La Caravella restaurant in Venice can be discovered immediately behind the...
La Caravella restaurant in Venice can be discovered immediately behind the newly-restored La Fenice theatre, just a few paces from the Piazza San Marco. Stepping inside, youll feel as if youve entered an antique sailing ship, with dark wood paneling, capstans and ropes and leaded windows. In summer, you may not step inside at all as La Caravella moves into a flower-filled courtyard complete with original wells, or the lighter courtyard dining room with typical Venetian ambience. The menu is typically Venetian too, with dishes like classic saor, marinated sardines with onions, pine kernels and raisins, fish soup, or oven orast turbot with potatoes and olives. In addition, the chef uses fresh seasonal ingredients to create trendier fare. The excellent wine list features both historical wine producers and smaller boutique vintners. Planning a party? La Caravella welcomes wedding receptions, private dinners, banquets, corporate entertaining, even coffee breaks. The garden seats up to 65 and one of the dining rooms up to 75.

Exquisite food and service, charming space

Dinner under the open sky in this cloistered garden is one of the great Venetian experiences. Lovely menu, discreet service. Not to be missed by anyone staying in and around San Marco.

This restaurant and bar initially appeared to dated for our tastes but we soon realised this was only added to it's charm. Great bellini and each served with delicious tasters, reasonable prices.

This was one of our best meals in Italy. The private courtyard was lovely and romantic. The service was superior, and the selections were varied and delicious.

Lovely food in a very great romantic location near St Marks Square. It's expensive but worth it we felt.

This is a fairly formal, expensive restaurant with terrific food. The waiter suggested the turbot over the sea bass, which was the right call. There are plenty of non- seafood dishes, but we wanted seafood since we had already been in Italy for awhile and wanted something different. We had both types of fish and the turbot preparation was far... More

Had a great evening with very nice service and really fine food. We wanted to go by gondola back to our hotel and we bought a bottle of wine from the restaurant. The waiter just gave us the wine glasses, free of charge and wished us a nice trip back to our hotel. What a nice evening : - )

I cannot thank this amazing restaurant enough for all that they did for us. I chose La Caravella as our wedding reception venue based on reviews of its food and service and online photos and I am so glad I did. As a bride, I was nervous about not seeing the place in person, but was always immediately put at... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
