Description: La Caravella restaurant in Venice can be discovered immediately behind the...
La Caravella restaurant in Venice can be discovered immediately behind the newly-restored La Fenice theatre, just a few paces from the Piazza San Marco. Stepping inside, you will feel as if you have entered an antique sailing ship, with dark wood paneling, capstans and ropes and leaded windows. In summer, you may not step inside at all as La Caravella moves into a flower-filled courtyard complete with original wells, or the lighter courtyard dining room with typical Venetian ambience. The menu is typically Venetian too, with dishes like classic saor, marinated sardines with onions, pine kernels and raisins, fish soup, or oven orast turbot with potatoes and olives. In addition, the chef uses fresh seasonal ingredients to create trendier fare. The excellent wine list features both historical wine producers and smaller boutique vintners. Planning a party? La Caravella welcomes wedding receptions, private dinners, banquets, corporate entertaining, even coffee breaks. The garden seats up to 65 and one of the dining rooms up to 75.

Perfect choice

Great location, really helpful attentive staff. A group of 10 of us went fir dinner to celebrate my wife's 70th birthday. We had a wonderful evening. Comfortable room, really great food . . . All round. Even our 3 yr old granddaughter enjoyed it. Must go again.

Nice location, good service but disappointing food. Totally overpriced for the quality. We tried different items on the menu. The "Bollito misto di pesce" was the worst fish dish I have been served in a long time while the risotto turned out to be fatty and tasteless. Even the fancy looking deserts could not manage to change our minds. They... More

Came here on a Friday night after reserving on their website. Greeted to a very smart bunch of waiters who were punctual and friendly, and were always on hand to meet ours needs. The food was served promptly and they gave us a HUGE selection of wines to choose from. We had a mains and desert to share, with a... More

We were looking forward to an excellent meal and experience. Sadly, one dish killed it for us. A promoted seafood special of razor clams, mussels and scallops was served luke warm - and rather tasteless. Piping hot might have saved it, but what a shame. The rest of the meal was very good - a couple nice fish dishes. The... More

I came for an early dinner - alone and with no reservation - and was treated to one of the best dining experiences in Venice. The personable and professional staff made excellent seasonal suggestions with excellent wine pairings. The room is traditional and comfortable. A very enjoyable evening.

We ate here on my birthday. Despite being a very busy restaurant it didn't disturb our evening and I'll give that credit to the marvelous staff.

I booked the restaurant for a group of non Italian visitors who had come to Venice on a business tour. The restaurant proposed a three course menu for dinner at a competitive price. The food was good and the service efficient and courteous. We went back for three nights in a row and we were pleased with the menu which... More

Great food, comfortable surroundings, looks like an old wooden ship inside complete with ships wheel. Food was sublime. Had no room for dolce/dessert but they also looked amazing

Ristorante La Caravella is one of the best Venice restaurant for a candle light dinner: It is set in a galleon boat (italiana Caravella). Best dishes are: “saor” classico con cipolle, pinoli e uvetta and branzino. They have nice biers to try: the biers from BALADIN and the famous high alcohol bier "Y". Try it and you never shall forget!

Great lunch here today, could not have been better looked after. Food and wine were lovely, especially good were the queen scallops with razor clams and the ameretto soufflé was divine! Highly recommend.

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
