Description: La Caravella restaurant in Venice can be discovered immediately behind the...
La Caravella restaurant in Venice can be discovered immediately behind the newly-restored La Fenice theatre, just a few paces from the Piazza San Marco. Stepping inside, youll feel as if youve entered an antique sailing ship, with dark wood paneling, capstans and ropes and leaded windows. In summer, you may not step inside at all as La Caravella moves into a flower-filled courtyard complete with original wells, or the lighter courtyard dining room with typical Venetian ambience. The menu is typically Venetian too, with dishes like classic saor, marinated sardines with onions, pine kernels and raisins, fish soup, or oven orast turbot with potatoes and olives. In addition, the chef uses fresh seasonal ingredients to create trendier fare. The excellent wine list features both historical wine producers and smaller boutique vintners. Planning a party? La Caravella welcomes wedding receptions, private dinners, banquets, corporate entertaining, even coffee breaks. The garden seats up to 65 and one of the dining rooms up to 75.

Lovely meal, great service-the Amaretto Souffle!!

We made a reservation through the Mi Siedo app a week beore arriving in Italy. My husband enjoyed his Sea Bass entree. I had the Spider Crab pasta. The service was attentive. The Souffle was worth the wait.

Walking in to La Caravella feels like a mix of walking in to the boughs of a wooden sailing ship and a "very Italian" Italian restaurant. I don't mean either of these comments as criticisms, I'm sure you'll agree with me when I say there's a certain feeling about a typical Italian restaurant. If I have a criticism of this... More

Gauchos yes. Hawksmoor London yes... This place, just to put things in perspective, the steak was literally unbelievable. The steak taste like the best steak you have ever had. However, melts in your mouth like lamb shank.... Enough said. Come here

A fabulous restaurant with awarding winning food and friendly and knowledgable staff. As we were celebrating a special birthday, myself and friends wanted a memorable dining experience which we certainly got at La Caravella. When I contacted Greta, head of reservations a few months ago about booking a table for my friends special celebration and asked if it was possible... More

This is my companion review to our stay at the Hotel Saturnia & International, and the only thing that trumped the fantastic hotel stay was an incredible dinner at La Caravella. Service was impeccable, as one would expect from a high end restaurant, yet so rarely observed in the majority today, with an informed and friendly crew of attendants ready... More

I had read great reviews as to what an institution this place was so we made a booking for lunch to see if it was as good as they said. Sadly, it wasn't. The service was slow, the menu was limited and quite pricey for what it was. It was very old school, it might have been great in the... More

On our recent trip to Venice we stayed at the Saturnia and chose to eat in La Caravella several times. This is an eating experience to savour, especially if you take advantage of the seasonal specialities which are separately printed in the centre of their main menu. We tried tiny baby artichokes with the freshest mozzarella filled with cream/burrato -... More

Remembering this restaurant from a drop-in visit 7 years ago, we booked a table for our last night in Venice. Our expectations was definitely met, with good food and impressive attendance from the waiters in a tall ship-like interior. Although the prices are high, this place is highly recommended.

I had a better meal at the trattoria near my hotel and cost half as much. Food was okay, but not worth the price of over 50€ for an appetizer and entree with no wine.

Had a wonderful meal there on their first weekend in the garden, an outdoor area that is covered. Can get chilly. Food was great and their wine recommendation stellar. Ended up pursuing the wine with a retailer down in Florence and having 6 bottles sent home. Pricey but a good value if you're looking for a high end meal. This... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
