Description: La Caravella restaurant in Venice can be discovered immediately behind the...
La Caravella restaurant in Venice can be discovered immediately behind the newly-restored La Fenice theatre, just a few paces from the Piazza San Marco. Stepping inside, youll feel as if youve entered an antique sailing ship, with dark wood paneling, capstans and ropes and leaded windows. In summer, you may not step inside at all as La Caravella moves into a flower-filled courtyard complete with original wells, or the lighter courtyard dining room with typical Venetian ambience. The menu is typically Venetian too, with dishes like classic saor, marinated sardines with onions, pine kernels and raisins, fish soup, or oven orast turbot with potatoes and olives. In addition, the chef uses fresh seasonal ingredients to create trendier fare. The excellent wine list features both historical wine producers and smaller boutique vintners. Planning a party? La Caravella welcomes wedding receptions, private dinners, banquets, corporate entertaining, even coffee breaks. The garden seats up to 65 and one of the dining rooms up to 75.

Expensive but good

We had a lovely evening with friends but after dining out at other restaurants on subsequent evenings we felt the food was slightly over priced although the quality was good.

We were visiting Venice from a cruise ship. As food enthusiasts, we were reeling from the ship's mediocre institutional food and we hankered for geniuine local food. We started with pastas that were properly al dente and tasty as well. Entrees were a crispy sea bass with a touch of pesto and sea bream with shell fish in parchment paper.... More

Great cocktails can be found, a small and cosy place with nibbles can be a place for a sundowner to sit down and enjoy your kind of music..80's and 90's. Nice ambience as well

This was recommended to us at Musica a Palazzo for dinner after the opera. By the time we arrived, it was about 10:40 on Saturday night and the restaurant is supposed to be open till 11. It looked beautiful and many people appeared to be enjoying their meal. But they told us they closed early and couldn't take us. Not... More

So good in fact we are here on 2 nights of our 5 night holiday. Set in a courtyard. It's a few paces down the road from their bar. Don't be put off by the look of the bar. Restaurant set is beautif courtyard. Great atmosphere. Unfussy but attentive service. Good choice and great menu. Try the amaretto soufflé -... More

Dinner under the open sky in this cloistered garden is one of the great Venetian experiences. Lovely menu, discreet service. Not to be missed by anyone staying in and around San Marco.

This restaurant and bar initially appeared to dated for our tastes but we soon realised this was only added to it's charm. Great bellini and each served with delicious tasters, reasonable prices.

This was one of our best meals in Italy. The private courtyard was lovely and romantic. The service was superior, and the selections were varied and delicious.

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
