At the Grand Canal restaurant based at the Hotel Monaco in the heart of Venice, you may dine on a beautiful terrace just a few inches above the waters of the Grand Canal and feast your eyes as well as your palate. It is drenched with romance. And with breathtaking views over gondolas, the spotlit Santa Maria della Salute, and the island of San Giorgio, the Grand Canal wouldnt have to offer exquisite dcor, excellent service and fine food. But it does. The menu is based on the daily-changing fresh fish and vegetables that Venetian cuisine dotes on, as well as a menu of meat and pasta dishes that change seasonally, like salmon and swordfish tartare with lemon and basil or terrine of foie gras with pumpkin puree. If your plans include private entertaining, the Grand Canal restaurant is set in the Hotel Monaco which houses the amazing, historic, perfectly Venetian Sala del Ridotto, the heart of 18th century Venice, where the worlds first Casino was born. Host your wedding, banquet, launch or meeting here, of take advantage of the eight adjacent meeting rooms for smaller groups. The Grand Canal restaurant is a Venetian favourite.

The sun was shining and we managed to find this beautiful gem, complete with the perfect scenery. Greeted with charming staff, followed by the perfect meal accompanied with perfect wine, suggested by the waiter, all with great value for money. A must do whilst in Venice. Enjoy!

My friend and I went here for dinner and ordered the traditionally spaghetti with cuttlefish and black sauce, minestrone soup, pizza, and strawberries with whipped cream. The only things we really ate were the pizza and strawberries. While the waiters brought us free cocktails, starters, and fritelle for carnival, I would say pass on this restaurant. The food is blasé... More

Had an excellent time. Had a wander around the shops and did spot of souvenir shopping. Stopped off at restaurant for an evening meal to have some pasta and a pizza, this was lovely and got a table right next to the canal where we watched locals arguing as someone had fallen out of a gondola and got soaked (their... My wife and I were quickly seated at a beautiful table directly overlooking the canal. The service was very good, surprisingly they did not have a table charge, the wines are moderately priced and the meals were very well prepared. A surprisingly good meal with good service at a reasonable cost.

This place will burn in your memory. You will have more memories per minute at his patio than any other and it's easily at the heart of a great Venice experience. Gondola watching is at it's best with 10-15 lined up in the water waiting to load and unload...yet they never touch. Ignore the outrageous prices and the slow 'posers'... More

We spent our last night at this restraurant and both had fillet steak. They were excellent and cooked to perfection. We the had Panna Cotta which was also very nice followed by Irish coffee. All this washed down with a bottle of Laguno white wine. Very nice by candle light. Highly recommended! We would use again without hesitation.

Convenient but there are better places to eat. Food was very average and basic fare would have enjoyed more if food was better, but location is great.

Restaurant is right at the San Marco vaporetto stop so it was perfect getting there. Arrived for lunch and the view of the Grand Canal was spectacular. Arrived late on a reservation and it was no problem. Service was efficient and impeccable. Had a selection of both grilled and fried local fish and it was outstanding. It was not cheap,... More

Our tour group stayed at another hotel down the street, but had breakfast reservations here. It was GREAT from an American standpoint. So much better than breakfasts offered in Florence and Rome.

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
