Description: At the Grand Canal restaurant based at the Hotel Monaco in the heart of...
At the Grand Canal restaurant based at the Hotel Monaco in the heart of Venice, you may dine on a beautiful terrace just a few inches above the waters of the Grand Canal and feast your eyes as well as your palate. It is drenched with romance. And with breathtaking views over gondolas, the spotlit Santa Maria della Salute, and the island of San Giorgio, the Grand Canal wouldnt have to offer exquisite dcor, excellent service and fine food. But it does. The menu is based on the daily-changing fresh fish and vegetables that Venetian cuisine dotes on, as well as a menu of meat and pasta dishes that change seasonally, like salmon and swordfish tartare with lemon and basil or terrine of foie gras with pumpkin puree. If your plans include private entertaining, the Grand Canal restaurant is set in the Hotel Monaco which houses the amazing, historic, perfectly Venetian Sala del Ridotto, the heart of 18th century Venice, where the worlds first Casino was born. Host your wedding, banquet, launch or meeting here, of take advantage of the eight adjacent meeting rooms for smaller groups. The Grand Canal restaurant is a Venetian favourite.

We have been on several occasions, both with and without teenage children and when on business. The Ristorante Grand Canal never disappoints and matches good food (particularly the turbot and the squid ink polenta) with good service. Wherever else you go in Venice, do make time for lunch or dinner at the Hotel Monaco

We've been in Venice for about five meals so far and this has been the best food yet. Great service and amazing food. The dessert leaves some to desire but the pasta and meat was out of this world. Highly recommended. And definitely the best restaurant on this strip. As my girlfriend put it, "Eat the chicken. It's yum yum... More

You must go to one of these restaurants when in Venice and watch the world sail by. I think that most of these restaurants and bars set on the main canals are marginally overpriced, but what's the point of visiting Venice if you don't take in the sights. Food and drink is relatively expensive, but the Italian service is terrific.

Our disappointement was (still is) quite high…. Except for the hors-d’oeuvres we were served during the apero, which were absolutely delicious, the whole dinner was just awful…. We did quite a few of very good restaurants, and many “simple” ones, but never have we been that disappointed with the quality of the food we were served. The first plate, the... More

Just back from visiting Venice (no not for THE wedding). Had a very special meal at the terrace restaurant of the Hotel Monaco. Fantastic setting and a view to die for. The service is superb and I had the buffalo mozzarella which was nothing like I had ever eaten back in the UK. Thoroughly recommend this for a special dinner... More

If you like top quality food and great service this is for you. Sit by the waters edge and eat the gourmet food and watch the water taxis and gondolas go by.

This is the most incredible place to dine, the view is spectacular and the service is fantastic, so friendly. I am lucky to have dined here twice ... once, just the two of us and with our luggage lost we sat in our day clothes and no-one minded. The second time we took our children and partners to Venice and... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
