Tantalising taste of the sea in Venice

We stumbled across Acqua & Mais on our way to the Rialto Bridge our first day in Venice. What a find. Sumptuous fried seafood and vegetables at reasonable prices in a crisp tempura type batter, not oily. We had a cone of the calamari and prawns and a stick with polenta vegetables and a crumbed... read more

I stumbled across this place 2 days ago. I was wandering around in the rain, and suddenly I noticed out of the corner of my eye, that I was standing next to what looked like a fried food stall. No one was there, the chef was talking on the phone, this could not look less promising. But it was raining... More

We ventured here while we were wandering through our self-created food tour. What followed was the best fried shrimp & calamari I'll ever have. The flavor was incredibly deep, with almost a buttery taste to it. I have never been happier to throw a bunch of squid tentacles in my mouth. Some might argue a lemon slice would be a... More

It can be nasty cold in Venice, our plane was late, we reached our place far too late to get a lunch in a restaurant, but here we were happy to get a warm cone full of hot polenta and fresh fried vegetables and the most delicious fried calamari and shrimp! Two good snacks for just € 8 both. Fast... More

Stumbled across this gem after having a slice of pizza and couldn't resist the cup of calamari for a cheap 3.50! Very lightly battered and made fresh right in front of you! You have to try this place!

This was a tasty and reasonable way to treat yourself and NOT feel like you are missing out! AMAZING flavour and the shrimp and sardines were MOST excellent! Wish we had one of these places near me in ONTARIO! Well DONE ; )

Traditional food here is served in paper cones, a practical and stylish solution that allows customers experience the essence of Venice: fried shellfish and squid topping a base of smooth polentina (hence, the origins of the name "Acqua e Mais", water and corn, which are polenta's main ingredients). Windows allow a full view of the cooks while preparing the food,... More

Perfect for a light lunch or small snack. There is a selection of little fried veg and sea food all very tasty and at a great price compared to some places in Venice. Its a reasonable walk away from the piazza San Marco closer to pizzola Roma.

Staying in San Polo

Neighborhood Profile
San Polo
The Rialto Bridge is the most famous sight along the Grand Canal in San Polo, smallest of Venice's six sestieri (districts) and by far the busiest neighborhood. Morning Venetians arrive to peruse the markets for fish, fruit and vegetables, while shops display goods from cheese to wine to desserts. San Silvestro and Rialto Market vaporetto (water taxi) stops add to the steady stream of foot traffic. San Polo is defined by churches including Basilica dei Frari, one of the most important churches sought by art lovers.
