Nice ambience, generally very good food

I ate here, on the ground floor of the Hotel Carlton on the Grand Canal, the first night I arrived in Venice. The service was impeccable, and for the most part the food was delicious. The shrimp and asparagus appetizer salad was excellent, though the main course of filet de rombo was a very small... read more

Oh, what a beautiful setting to walk into after walking in the bitter wind and finding store after store shuttered and closed. We were treated so well. We started with a shaved beef and arugola appetizer and our host poured us a beautiful amarone. We each chose a different dish - spaghetti bolognese, lamb chops, each one better than the... More

Creative and passionate chef - explore the menu and enjoy the fusion of flavour and delicious Italian Cuisine. The mark of good dining is when you go with the chefs creations (and not asked to choose your accompaniments to upscale the bill). The good chef will know what flavours combine to enhance the dining experience.

Atmosphere was great for a date type setting. The most comfortable restaurant we had been to in Venice/Rome. Great bilingual wait staff. Food was carefully prepared with good mix of sea food/meats/and interesting anti pasti. Had squid ink tortelli with sea bass filling....came with sauce of clam/shrimp and light tomato flavor. It was a crush! Not a top of the... More

We arrived in Venice at 09:30 on the Viking Star from Istanbul. After checking into the Hotel Antiche Figure we went looking for a nice lunch place. There was a Burger King in the next block, but we had our thoughts on something a little more Italian. The Hotel Carlton next door had a full service restaurant so we decided... More

Ambiance was lovely, waiter very attentive, but the most important part of the dining experience is the food and it was, for the most part awful !! Our complimentary appetisers were absolutely tasteless,.... My entre was the same - no flavour - I poured some balsamic vinegar over it to try to get some sort of taste into it. Our... More

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighborhood identity.
