Good food but best if you are Italian

We enjoyed our dinner here but we did have a few issues. It is true that if they figure out that you aren't local the service is different. We were next to tables with Italians and they offered much different service. They had their meal timing down well, plate of cookies at the end of the meal... read more

We were lucky enough to get a table for 2 without reservation. The place was fully packed - mostly with (local?) Italians. Since many people got turned away during our dinner, it seems a good idea to reserve a table in advance. The service was extremely friendly...with obviously regular uests. Those were welcomed and treated almost like family members. For... More

On a Sunday night without a reservation (big mistake!) we ended up here after a couple of failed attempts to get a table elsewhere. The decor dragged us in and the notion of a special Venetian fish menu. We were ushered to the last free table, water and the menu was brought and then nothing happened for quite a while.... More

Solid food, like I can imagine home made Italian would be. Nothing super fancy but very good, fun athmosphere and nice old school waiters. Had a great dinner!

Lovely restaurant at the back street, what looked/felt like a 'local' street. Not overly touristy. Couple of bowls of pasta and 2 glasses of wine just and still managed to wack a €65 bill.

I'd simply like to say that this was a great find. So much so we went back for a second visit during our stay in Venice. It was lunch the first time and dinner the second time and both a real pleasure. Sergio our waiter on both occasions is somewhat of a character and with little encouragement enjoys a good... More

Not what you would call an inspiring looking operation from the outside--especially in wintertime! But not only are you assured of a warm welcome inside (kitchy maritime theme décor aside) what's on the plate is always what matters in the end...& our table of 5 decided to throw monetary caution to the winds & put ourselves in the hands of... Il Nuovo Galeon is my absolute favorite restaurant in this part of Venice. I work on the Architecture Biennale every other year which means that I'm in Venice two-three times a year with quite a few colleages and business partners and we always visit this lovely restaurant at least twice per trip. Situated at Via Garibaldi, a few minutes walk... More

I have opted to review this restaurant because of the negative picture given so far. We enjoyed our evening at Il Galeon and any eccentricities made the experience the more enjoyable. The menu was interesting and food tasty. It was nicely presented with appropriate advice. It was not that expensive and anyway you should not expect to get decent food... More

Our first meal in Venice was a massive Debbie downer. The staff’s obvious disdain for foreigners was apparent almost immediately and I’m disappointed I didn’t ‘trust my gut’ as Oprah would say at get out before we ordered. Food was fine but v expensive and they applied a 6 euro service charge, I can only imagine was for the deep... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
