Just had a delightful meal here. The waiter was courteous and helpful. The food was very good especially the spider crab and pasta with anchovy. The service was prompt and an error in st artery was quickly rectified. I would certainly recommend.

My college age son and I had a fantastic meal here. It was so good, we came back the next night and had another fantastic meal, with the same entertaining waiter. I'm allergic to shellfish and the waiter decided my meal for me - excellent. The atmosphere was fun, with more local people at the restaurant than tourists. Someone had... More

Our concierge recommended the restaurant when our first-choice was full on a Sunday evening. It's on a main street in the quieter area of Castello, but was busy throughout our meal. There was a mix of both locals and tourists. Service was friendly (especially to our teenage boys) and in spite of our faltering Italian. The food was good with... More

We ate here on our first night in Venice as it was near our apartment, looked nice and was busy. I wish we hadn't. The food was poor. A portion of lasagne at 15 euros was minuscule and lacking taste . My stinco was dry as a bone. The service was poor. The waiter who served us just threw the... More

Food and service the worst we've experienced in over two weeks traveling Italy! I ordered the Penne Arribiata, it was 12 euro and arrived on a side plate with perhaps 3/4 cup of pasta with bland tomatoe sauce. My husband had the seafood pasta and when he asked the waiter for Parmesan(on my behalf) the waiter mocked him and refused... More

Recommended by the staff at our hotel and although not as busy as those nearer St. Marks Square, booking is essential as it's relatively small and always busy. The four of us were all happy with our choices and although it was not cheap, it was still good in comparison to those nearer the touristy parts and a lot more... More

We were advised to visit this restaurant by concierge at Danieli hotel (special thanks to him). Starting from corking the wine (which was done totaly inappropriate), to the service. The food that was brought: mozzarella salad and octopus salad were beyond awful. The mozzarella was a very bad quality from cow milk. It was absolutly hard to chew. So as... More

This restaurant was recommended at our hotel. It was a bit of a walk as it is a little way from the centre of town. The food was okay. We had a bottle of wine which was initially served in a glass with a chip on the rim. The glass (and the wine poured into it) were quickly removed and... More

il Nuovo Galeon was recommended by the concierge at our hotel the Metropole. The concierge made our reservations and specifically asked that we be served by Sergio. Upon arrival we were treated like VIP locals. I asked Sergio to choose our complete dinner from wine to desert to provide us a typical Venetian experience, with fish as the main course.... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
