Food and service the worst we've experienced in over two weeks traveling Italy! I ordered the Penne Arribiata, it was 12 euro and arrived on a side plate with perhaps 3/4 cup of pasta with bland tomatoe sauce. My husband had the seafood pasta and when he asked the waiter for Parmesan(on my behalf) the waiter mocked him and refused... More

We were advised to visit this restaurant by concierge at Danieli hotel (special thanks to him). Starting from corking the wine (which was done totaly inappropriate), to the service. The food that was brought: mozzarella salad and octopus salad were beyond awful. The mozzarella was a very bad quality from cow milk. It was absolutly hard to chew. So as... More

This restaurant was recommended at our hotel. It was a bit of a walk as it is a little way from the centre of town. The food was okay. We had a bottle of wine which was initially served in a glass with a chip on the rim. The glass (and the wine poured into it) were quickly removed and... More

il Nuovo Galeon was recommended by the concierge at our hotel the Metropole. The concierge made our reservations and specifically asked that we be served by Sergio. Upon arrival we were treated like VIP locals. I asked Sergio to choose our complete dinner from wine to desert to provide us a typical Venetian experience, with fish as the main course.... More

We enjoyed our dinner here but we did have a few issues. It is true that if they figure out that you aren't local the service is different. We were next to tables with Italians and they offered much different service. They had their meal timing down well, plate of cookies at the end of the meal that was complimentary,... More

We were lucky enough to get a table for 2 without reservation. The place was fully packed - mostly with (local?) Italians. Since many people got turned away during our dinner, it seems a good idea to reserve a table in advance. The service was extremely friendly...with obviously regular uests. Those were welcomed and treated almost like family members. For... More

On a Sunday night without a reservation (big mistake!) we ended up here after a couple of failed attempts to get a table elsewhere. The decor dragged us in and the notion of a special Venetian fish menu. We were ushered to the last free table, water and the menu was brought and then nothing happened for quite a while.... More

Solid food, like I can imagine home made Italian would be. Nothing super fancy but very good, fun athmosphere and nice old school waiters. Had a great dinner!

Lovely restaurant at the back street, what looked/felt like a 'local' street. Not overly touristy. Couple of bowls of pasta and 2 glasses of wine just and still managed to wack a €65 bill.

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
