Fish speciality for lunch

We had a great lunch there, everything was fresh and tasty! We ordered grilled fish for 2, they were fresh and delicious. The staff is friendly, the place is fun with all the cork screwer collection on the walls. The restaurant was full of Italian people (when locals go in a restaurant, it is... read more

Was in Venice over the weekend for the Venice carnival, and we had a pretty bad meal on our first day there as we walked into one of those restaurants near St marks square, indeed it was one of those tourist trap restaurants with bad food and small portion. Determined to try at least a good meal in Venice, my... More

When I come here it's like being at home. It's all so perfect that the food takes a back seat, although it is always excellent from appetizer to dessert and wine to coffee! Thanks Pino, you are a great teacher of life as well as being a talented pastry chef. P. S. Congratulations also to the chef Lorenzo, the new... More

We went to Al Vecio Portal on the advice of our hotel. It was nicely away from the bustle of San Marco Square and the tourist areas. The service was very good and there appeared to be many locals there. We were interested in something simple after having had many days of rich food. We shared a ravioli dish that... More

Venice restaurant Found this restaurant just tucked off the front close to the The Bridge of Sighs We thought it would be cheaper but to be honest not much difference in pricing than those with the fabulous views. Food was good and accommodating to my friends gluten free diet. Service friendly. The seafood ravioli in shrimp sauce and absolutely delicious.... More

We ate here a couple of times during our stay in Venice as it was very close to our hotel. Good simple pizza and tasty bowls of pasta the second night. Always seems to be busy with local as well as a lot of tourists, so don't expect service to be too snappy.

For good food and good service that is minutes from Piazza San Marco or from the Arsenale (Biennale folks!) AVP is still light-years from the tourist hordes that populate Riva degli Schivone. Head down Calle del Forno and find AVP on your right at the end of the 'block' - take a seat outside and enjoy the locals walking by,... More

Dinner hours are 6:45 pm to 11:00 pm. There is a front outdoor patio, interior dining room and an outdoor rear garden. Try to eat in the latter. More private and cooler. Mention the bed and breakfast that recommended you there and the service would bring extra stuff to drink and eat.

Really enjoyed dinner here last week - and the service made a lot of it. Down the alley from the main waterfront not far from arsenale ferry station. We sat in the back garden which was absolutely great. We enjoyed the complimentary spritzer and then we shared a good pizza, fresh cooked fish, preseco, wine recommended by the waiter (and... More

This is a small place tucked away and the food is very good. The older owner has a poor attitude and is bordering on rude but don't let his attitude spoil the food from someone in the kitchen that cares. Had some friends kids with us and they enjoyed the food...

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
