Far from the madding crowd

Very good food in a relaxed atmosphere, secluded place where you can relax and drink a perfect spritz.

We come to Venice twice a year. This is our latest find. Fantastic, happy, small place. Right off a small bridge and by a canal so there is great Venice life with fewer tourists. Between the Osspedale ans Santa Maria Formosa, a great quite area near everything and away from the tourists!

Love the owner and the wine. Perfect spot to get away from the crowds and watch the boats go by. The cicchetti were great and be sure to try the amarone wine. It's expensive but for a reason - it's delicious!

This place was right outside our hotel, so we went there a few times for aperitivi. The cicchetti (Venetian tapas basically) were excellent and they had a great range. The drinks were great - the spritzers were perfect, and they also had local prosecco which was a treat. Everything was so well priced too. And you could sit outside on... More

Came across this 'Ostaria' by chance as we weaved our way through the streets trying to find the Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo. Just local people drinking and snacking, overlooking a narrow canal. We had delicious octopus and a freshly made mozzarella and tomato salad, Quiet and relaxed.

So you're out visiting the Zanipolo and the equally magnificent equestrian statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni when your stomach calls. You can go to either of the two trattoria/bars right behind you b ut for something a little less touristy, try Da Simson. It's nearby by obscurely located down narrow, darkish, utterly unprepossessing alle Bressana. It fronts on the calle and... More

This small bar is a little out of the way but well worth the effort. The drinks were incredibly cheap, as were the cicheti (bar snacks). I had a local merlot- a steal at EU $2 a glass and my partner drank the local prosecco- EU $2.50 a glass. The snacks were delicious-- small meatballs on a slice of polenta,... More

Quaint on a canal, hang out side reasonable food freindly owner Mimo short for Dominick. Seek it out . 1 Euro glass of house wine. Yes these prices were great. I did not tell Mimo in fear that he would raise the prices. Strongly suggest you go.

We had afternoon drinks in this cosy bar. The music and the atmosphere enhanced us. When my boyfriend paid for our drinks he dropped a 10 euro note and the guy asked us about it. He was more than generous.

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
