Quiet restaurant away from the crowds

Our hotel (Hotel Bisanzio) recommended this place for dinner. It was a quiet place, away from the crowds. The food was delicious. As with all the places we visited for dinner, we had to wait a bit for the check. Also most restaurants tack on the "cover charge", which is irritating, but must be... read more

RISTORANTE CARPACCIO is a gem of a place. Located on the shores of the Grand Canal this is not your usual ‘tourist’ place. The ambience is intimate and warm (although large groups were catered for comfortably on the first floor when we visited so everyone is made happy) Service is professional, friendly and attentive. They don’t miss a beat, without... More

We had a very nice early dinner in this restaurant on the waterfront, just down the road from our hotel. The waiters were attentive, the food was excellent and the service at a sensible pace, neither rushed nor too slow. The view over the waterfront is reasonable, depending which table you get.

I visited this place on my own whilst waiting for friends to arrive. The staff were very friendly and made me feel very welcome and looked after. The food was good and the service quick, friendly and attentive so I would certainly recommend a visit. It's five minutes from all the main areas but isn't quite as hectic. The food... More

Awful food and service all at very high price. The food was the worst we have eaten ever and the service was terrible. Pasta at McDonald's may taste better. Wine selection was zero and all this at a price tag that rivals top restaurants. Avoid at all costs.

Came here for a dinner for two. Ordered beef bresaola. This was ok, nothing fantastic. Main course ordered one spaghetti lobster. This was pathetic. It came with only one small piece of lobster in the whole dish. When I raised this with the manager, he was extremely rude and abrupt. He offered no solution apart from arguing and ruining our... Right next to Hotel Gabrielli and without a very impressive facade is a small little restaurant called Ristorante Carpaccio. We stayed in Hotel Gabrielli on this trip but did not notice the restaurant at all. Tonight we decided to try it just because no one was in the mood to walk at all. (There was some forecast of Thundershowers too).... More

Pretty, intimate restaurant on the waterfront. Friendly but chaotic service. Poor (for Italy), overpriced food (common in Venice). Disappointing.

Here is how it went down. On the recommendation of our hotel concierge six of us headed to this quaint seafood restaurant on the waterfront. To be fair, it started out with a nice bottle of reasonably priced Chardonnay. It went downhill from the point of ordering. I don't do well with shellfish, so asked about the "Venetian special Cod... We were sent here by their sister restaurant as it was full. When ordering, I asked for a recommendation of a white fish to share with my 3 year old daughter, saying we only needed a normal portion... I was told sea bream was the best option. When the bill came, I had been charged for 2 sea breams- a... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
