For a quick stop

For having a quick refreshment or snacks this can be an option. There are a few tables outside in a crowded small street. Coffee was moderate.

The tuna trammezini at the Bar Verde are stuffed with tuna--and not with mayonnaise. That's why I walk all the way from the far side of the Piazza San Marco, where I stay for extended periods of time, to the Campiello SS Giacomo e Filippo, for the friendly service and great trammezini: tuna with olives, tuna with tomato, tuna with... My wife and I visited Venice recently and we found this place in the Rick Steves guide book. It is a small place with very fast/brusque service. However, the food is good and you can get in and out of the place without being hassled to buy or pay more than you expect to. They have a good mix of... More

I can't understand the bad reviews of this little gem of a place! We ate here 4 times - not full meals but coffee and pastries and we had the little sandwiches and cichetti for lunch one day. The food and coffee were delicious and the service was friendly. You do need to order at the counter and then take... More

We enjoyed the salads and paninis, and the service was fast. The seating area is a bit cramped, and the decor does not have "old world" flavor.

Visited as a couple in mid-May around 7pm on a Tuesday when it was not very busy and sat at one of the outside tables in this wine-bar/cafe situated close to San Marco. The waiter glanced at us several times but ignored us, seemingly deliberately so, from the outset choosing to go back inside and chat to his fellow staff,... More

Food average at best we had a salad, and coffee. We came with fellow travellers from a tour group and each of us experienced the same surly, rude and impatient treatment. Even when we ordered a bottle of water after our meals where plonked down on the table we where treated to the eye roll. I had to ask for... More

This cafe/bar is in the most highly trafficked tourist eating zones in Venice. Despite this, our service was friendly and the sandwiches were really good! The waiter had some trouble getting everything straight with the orders but was the nonetheless attentive and friendly. I see other visitors didn't experience the friendly service we did. Perhaps we had a better waiter.... More

Great service, friendly, delicious breakfast panini and cafe. They do not take Visa. Allowed me to run to local ATM. Irish Coffee was strong... Plenty of whiskey. ;). Recommend!

Good spritz where you pay extra to sit but don't plan to sit for long. They push you out in a big hurry ready to sit another group of tourists. The staff is brusque and friendly to locals but treat tourists like they were invisible! Their tramezzini are only average and look better than they taste. Go across to the wine... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
