Lovely little local

A lovely little restaurant with fabulous Venetian dishes, and a wonderful wine list - especially by the glass. Very friendly staff, who were incredibly patient with the group of Chinese visitors struggling with the combination of the English language and Italian food.

My wife and I made a reservation at this place based on the trip advisor reviews. We were somewhat disappointed initially when we arrived because there were quite obviously no locals present. Any fears of having fallen for tourist trap where is soon dispelled however. The food was great, the house wine extremely good value and the staff genuinely helpful... More

We had a very good lunch at this place. We found it thanks to lonely planet and we did not regret it. The place is cosy, many locals drinking at the "bar" (as the bar part is tiny...), great waiters and tasty food! We had the black ravioli and the three cod fish and did not regret our choice :)... One of the best meals we've had in venice. We managed to get a table without a reservation and we ordered based on the waiter's recommendations. The food was delicious.

I visited Alla Staffa with my husband on a recent weekend trip to Venice, actually we had dinner there twice during our 3 night stay which really isn't like us but it was so good we had to go back! It's a tiny place, maybe 8 tables, the extensive menu is all in Italian but don't let that put you... More

Food was good but not as good as to get 5 starts. The main let down was that pasta was too salty, not one but the 4 dishes we ordered were very salty. Service was good and place is small and cozy.

We walked in off the street and were given a table but with a time limit as the table had been previously reserved. We did watch the waiter pick and choose who he let in, but this obviously works for them as it was full. Hence the title - worth a try! Really yummy food, esp the hot chocolate soufflé... More

This review is very unlike the majority of reviews you read for Staffa. The food for us was decent, the Scampi de Sara (a Staffa special) was delicious (albeit terribly unhealthy), and the selection of local seafood was excellent. However, the service was awful. My girlfriend and I ordered a first course to split, and each ordered a second course.... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
