Good food, service with ups and downs

Upon arrival, we did have a reservation, we weren't greeted with what you'd call warmth or friendliness. And bringing the menu and aperitif the waiter seemed mildly annoyed at best. The restaurant is good for a group of friends or a romantic date. The restaurant is nicely done and has some interesting dishes. The wine was a litte too warm and the food not quite 5 stars - therefor the 4 star rating. But nevertheless a really good place.

but worth checking out. The food was very good, and the service was good too. The only criticism was that the steak kebab was a bit ordinary and not that exciting, it was exactly what it said on the tin but it was nonetheless very good.

We visited Ai Mercanti on 2 consecutive evenings whilst in Venice. The food each time was spectacular with wonderful tastes and amazing presentation. The wines were beautiful and well priced by the glass. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the busy streets, this restaurant is well worth hunting out.

We happened to find this restaurant by chance while walking around the streets in San Marco. It is situated inside a quiet back street and not so easy to find. Loved the décor, ambience, service, food and absolutely everything about this restaurant. The waiters are so amazingly friendly and they went out of their way to make gluten free food... More

The owner or manager was a rude person. He greeted us coldly and arrogantly when we arrived (no reservation) as if we should feel guilty for not having a reservation. During the course of our meal, seated close to the kitchen, we could hear him loudly berate his staff. We ordered a bottle of wine. I was never asked to... More

Lovely restaurant in a quiet backstreet in the San marco area. Traditional starters included spleen and other offal, although it also had excellent fish and special options ( a milky risotto with oysters and a coffee sauce). Nice wine selection . Beautifully presented in a nouveau style so i'm sure a star will one day arrive on the door

Had seen this place recommended on a couple of other sites as well as TA and we really enjoyed it. The food was of a really high standard and the wine the waiter suggested complemented it very well. Whilst the meal wasn't cheap it was more than reasonably priced considering the quality. We were very warmly welcomed when we arrived... More

We made reservations for ai Marcanti through our hotel concierge who suggested it as an alternative to traditional Italian food. We arrived and were seated immediately along with having our wait staff recommend several aperitif drinks to start with. The daily specials were presented before we reviewed the menu so we could take them into consideration. The appetizer was creative... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighborhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
