Description: Ristorante Ai Mercanti in the heart of Venice between the Rialto Bridge and Piazza San Marco is an upmarket, romantic restaurant in very cool style that enjoys a high-flying gastronomic reputation. The vaulted dining room is decorated in sophisticated terracotta and black with impressive shining globe lighting. The bar is wittily decorated with dressmakers’ forms and sexy corsets – great conversation starters. The menu is classically-inspired Venetian of a high order, focusing on things from the sea and changing every two months to take advantage of the and array of the freshest ingredients in true Italian style and pastas and desserts are all made in-house. In warm weather the dining room sprawls out onto the adjoining campiello for the loveliest al fresco dining anywhere – the Venetians who crowd Ai Mercanti certainly think so.

This small restaurant hidden in a courtyard not far from St Mark's Square is a great find. The dining rooms are simple and elegant, the food imaginative and the service friendly and professional. In an area notorious for rip-off tourist traps this is one to seek out. Prices are extremely reasonable, about 40 euros for 3 courses, and the wine... More

We found this restaurant by chance and we're not disappointed. The menu was fabulous, the home made bread delicious and we finished off with the most amazing deconstructed apple crumble! The staff were knowledgeable, friendly and very efficient. The crowd was sophisticated. Not full of tourists. A must find for your stay in Venice.

We were looking for somewhere a bit different for a birthday celebration, and were recommended to Ai Mercanti but the Telegraph guide to Venice. Without this we would never have come across it by chance, as it is tucked away in a small square off a back street in the St Marks area, and even with a map it was... More

This was my favourite meal of our five day break in Venice. It is quirky and sometimes the wait between courses is extended , but not a problem because it gives you a chance to savour this intimate bolt hole . The food is modern , local and immaculately presented . Add to that a lovely selection of wines by... More

This restaurant was different to most typical Italian restaurants that I have dined at. The food was delicious and the staff efficient and friendly. The menu was slightly more sophisticated than a typical trattoria with the portions smaller in size and more gourmet dining than wholesome italian. The food was delicious and for the standard reasonably priced. There was no... More

stopped here for a late lunch, and boy what a great find. Had fabulous spaghetti and cheese for pud. Excellent wine, great service, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

We had a celebratory dinner in this delightful restaurant with attentive service which catered to all our whims. Four of us shared several dishes which enabled us to sample many of the delicacies which this excellent establishment provides.

We visited Ai Mercanti on out first night in Venice after a recommendation in the Telegraph and other online blogs. We were not disappointed. Despite the heavy rain and off-peak timing, the restaurant was almost full. Lovely atmosphere inside with a nice lighting and music. The staff were very friendly and attentive and made great recommendations on a lovely local... More

I just wish they had more variety of seafood pastas. Otherwise we had cheese risotto with truffle and spaghetti. Their deserts were AMAZING!! I will never forget their chocolate interpretations, being a chocolate fan!! Nice and fast service. Very friendly staff! Romantic ambiance with candle light lit on your dinner table. It was full so it was noisy which killed... More
