Surprisingly good tofu!

I went in search of vegetarian food as I was sick of pasta and pizza. The restaurant is very drab and plain with plastic table cloths and neon light. So I had low expectations. I was therefore surprised to find a really lovely spicy tofu dish. There wasn't a lot of vegetarian food on the menu and... read more

what can I say. I know I wasn't expecting five star dining, but I was hopeful that it would be better than what you can get at any supermarket. Unfortunately I was disappointed. I ordered crispy fried beef in a spicy sauce. Now I didn't expect a sauce and I'm glad it didn't come with one. The beef was probably... More

My wife wanted some noodles after being burned out on pizza. These aren't my favorite restaurants so I opted for a couple of spring rolls. It wasn't gourmet eating, but we weren't disappointed by the food or the service. Our bill was only 10 euro (no drinks), so it was a quick get-something-in-your-stomach stop and filled the bill. Would I... More

I have read the majority of the reviews for the Capitol (Chinese restaurant) in Venice, Italy. On the whole they are not very flattering. It is certainly not the Ritz nor does it try to be but we think it is value for money. Anyway, this is our take on the restaurant. My husband and I stumbled upon this restaurant... More

We tried this Chinese restaurant on recommendation from someone that had eaten there the year before, but to be perfectly honest the food was really disgusting. After placing our order the food came up literally in a few minutes, considering that the restaurant was empty and we all ordered different dishes there is no way they could have cooked the... More

There isn't that much to say about this restaurant, the reason I say this is we spent very little time there, despite having a 2 course meal. On our 4th day in Venice I was missing some home comforts, we thought we would have Chinese food for dinner, having eaten Chinese food in several countries it is usually reasonably consistent.... Why eat Chinese in Venice. Well, all the Italian restaurants you pass have people standing outside trying to draw you in, and this we hate, so we walk on by. The Chinese don't do it, so we went there. Most of the meals we did not recognise, but what we ordered was fine. Besides, we go by the rule that... More

My food had no flavour whatsoever. The rice arrived stone cold. The spinach in garlic arrived in a puddle of murky water with two pieces of visible uncooked garlic. The staff are very good at whisking your plate away the second they think you are finished with it. Totally unremarkable and not worth the price.

The place was well lit. The staff was courteous. The food was good. The portion was small for European standard, but for the price, it was ok. No cover charge, but there was 12% tax. I paid €38 for Crispy Duck, Fried Pork Ribs, Steamed dumplings, corn soup, steamed rice, fried rice, and 1L water. Not bad! :)

We liked dining here so much we came here twice. After a three week tour of Italy the last thing we wanted to see was another pasta or pizza. Captiol was a welcome reprieve! The staff were friendly. Food was cheap and came out quickly. Dishes were brought out one at a time the first night. The second night we... More

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
