A good meal in a thunderstorm

My wife and I had a good meal her in the middle of a thunderstorm. The restaurant was one of a number recommended by our hotel. Situated near the train station don't be put off by the front entrance. We had a table overlooking the canal. We had scallops and also prawns as a starter and shared a... read more

Don't let the small store front fool you. The restaurant is very large with a large covered deck on the Grande Canal. The food was very good. I had the Lasagna and it melted in your mouth. My wife had Prosciutto e melone and said it was very good.

Whilst staying in Venice we were overwhelmed by the restaurants. We ended up asking the Hotelier to recommend a good restaurant. He recommended Povoledo, we were greeted by Roberto. He warmly invited us in, we were pleasantly surprised when he led us outside. The back of the restaurant overlooks the Grand Canal. In the evening the surroundings were magical, the... More

This isn't the first time I have eaten at this restaurant. Its simple, easy, fast and the staff is courteous. Tonight I got the mussels in white wine sauce and while the mussels were slightly undercooked (and really slightly) the broth was yummy and every caution was taken not to contaminate my food with gluten. For dinner, I ate the... More

Such a beautiful view on the grand canal.. The food is delicious and the portions are huge! I didn't like the blue cheese taste in the ravioli (personal distaste) and the waiter Alberto was very kind to replace it free of charge.. Excellent overall! I advise the scallops as an appetizer.

We passed by on the way from the vaporetto to our hotel and saw an interesting meny and got a glimpse of the canal-facing terrace in the far end of the restaurant. We went back quite early and got a table outside. The seafood risotto was perfect and the service was very friendly. Next day, our last in Venice, we... More

We went to this restaurant on the 01st of June 2015 with our tour group that had been on the Flavors of Italy tour. Even though we ate inside the restaurant the outside area next to the grand canal is very nice and romantic. The house wine was served in pottery jugs and was very tasty. My wife ordered the... After we found this restaurant we ate here almost everyday! It is the best pasta taste you wish for. The staff is extremely kind :) The food is very good, there are Fish menu and meat menu to choose from. I gladly recommend to all! They have a beautiful terrace looking over the Grand Canal. You find them at 1... More

The Trattoria Povoledo has a wonderful canal-side outside seating area which is long but not that wide, which means almost everyone dines close to the canal. We got seated quickly and thoroughly enjoyed the ambiance and the food. We had Spaghi Frutti Mare (spaghetti with seafood) and Spaghetti Ragu (spaghetti with red sauce) and we both enjoyed our meal. For... More

We stopped here after we first arrived for our first meal and a cool beer. Across from Hotel Grande Canal. Had some fresh mozzarella and tomato and the a huge calzone. It was tremendous, and tasty. Trattoria sits right on the Grand Canal, had a nice table along side. Only disappointment is we asked the waiter for a photo, and... More

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighborhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighborhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
