Fine food and good staff

Very friendly staff, central location though a little outside the main crowd stream (which is a bonus) and excellent food. The seafood plattert starter is an absolute must.

The venue for our final evening in Venice had been planned well in advance, and we were really looking forward to visiting the Osteria Barababao, not far from Rialto. This restaurant was easier to find than we thought, and looked bright and attractive from the outside. The service here was friendly and inobtrusive. To start, we ordered the Fish soup... More

Me and my boyfriend visited this place without having read any reviews or without any recommendations, we just stumbled upon it and chose it as it offered what we wanted- a spaghetti carbonara and pizza margherita. Pretty basic meals but we just wanted to try traditional Italian classics. Service was okay, our order was taken promptly then we were given... More

While walking around Venice, we stopped for an early dinner. They have daily specials, which is what I selected. I had a Lasagna with Bolognese. It was fantastic. I finally had my first piece of Tiramisu! And.......let me tell you it was worth the wait! My friend had a salad with shrimp, which looked really great and she loved it.... More

Not bad but I had better before. I had the lasagna and it wasn't anything special. Beer selection is poor. Deserts are ok, and the place is hard to find. The octopus salad was lacking of flavor and too chewy for my taste.

You know it is going to be good when everyone in the restaurant is a regular. The food was excellent as was the house wine and service.

We found this place just a few minutes away from our hotel during our stay in August. We had our first dinner there, and than our second dinner, and eventually the third one too :-) great service, great food, great coffee and great location

Don't come here for the best of Venetian seafood but if you want home cooked pasta it's one the best. Their Spaghetti Carbonara can't be beaten. Get 3 primi pastas and dig in.

Ate the mixed cheese starter - recommended, but it comes with marmalade and hazelnuts rather than the advertised honey and walnuts. The pizza was as good as a pizza should be in Italy, but the desert was disappointing. Our marscapone, pistachio and raspberry pudding had clearly been frozen, then defrosted in a microwave. The wafer was soggy, and some parts... More

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighborhood Profile
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighborhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
