Description: Venices Vecio Fritolin is a much loved, characterful little restaurant...
Venices Vecio Fritolin is a much loved, characterful little restaurant near the Rialto Bridge in Santa Croce where people have been eating traditional Venetian food for over a century. It is one of the citys few still-thriving fritolini, precursors of todays fast food eateries, popular in the 1800s with both the rich and less well off. The scrumptious historic finger food is still served, alongside masterpiece variations on other local Venetian and Italian dishes. The seafood and vegetables come daily from the nearby Rialto Markets, and are on the constantly-changing menu within hours. Whether they stumble or deliberately step onto Vecio Fritolin's pink terrazzo floor, everyone's invariably glad they did.

Traditional Venetian Trattoria

The emphasis here is on traditional dishes. The salt cod with polenta appetizer was the highlight of our meal but the bucatini with mussels and spicy sauce was also memorable. Excellent local wine list and friendly service.

We enjoyed an absolutely wonderful meal here for dinner. Don't miss the fritto misto as a secondi. It may be the best in Venice. Staff were very kind. The pasta; divine! We were so happy they could accommodate our party of two. Call ahead for a reservation.

My friends and I went here because it was in our Rolling Venice Guide for students the food was very good. When we asked for our bill they told us we didn't qualify for the discount since we didn't order more than a bottle of wine and pasta, even though we had our discount guide on the table throughout dinner... A little hard to find but worth the effort. A charming, elegant and typical Venetian restaurant. The food and service were impeccable and the staff extremely helpful and professional. It appeared to be very popular with locals with thankfully fewer tourists than the more trammeled routes. Local specialities highlighted and delicious wines recommended. Well worth a visit.

Slightly off the regular tourist route we found this restaurant by chance. Liking the sound of the menu we decided to eat lunch. We were pleasantly surprised with the experience. Fresh & tasty food all with seasonally based ingredients. A great local white wine recommendation by the waiter & very friendly attentive service. All surprisingly good value for money given... Slightly off the beaten track, but still only a few minutes walk from anywhere in Venice. The reataurant was quiet when we arrived and we weere offered a choice of good tables. But it soon filled up with what appeared to be locals, always a good sign. The food was very good, just what we wanted for a first night... More

We were very surprised by the mediocrity of this restaurant after the rave review on TA. We had a small starter, a fish dish, and a zucchini and eggplant dish. All of them were bland, under seasoned, terribly underwhelming, and well overpriced considering the amazing meals we had in other restaurants with similar prices.

This restaurant has the best fish fry in Venice, and the other fish plates are sublime. The fry is listed on the menu as "scartosso", which in Venetian means "rolled-up paper", which is what you will receive -- a paper envelope filled with sardines, squid, shrimp and vegetables fried to perfection, crisp, fragrant and tasty. But you should also try... More

From the ease of making our reservation state-side (grazie Irina) to our warm greeting upon arrival by all of the staff, we enjoyed our dinner very much. The wine was lovely, the salad beautiful, the entrees fresh and just as described (see pic of menu) and the tiramisu was absolutely out of this world -- the best we have ever... More

We loved our meal at Vecio Fritolin. We found out about this restaurant from good friends and were told to be prepared to search for the restaurant. Luckily, we found it easily and were much rewarded. The service was excellent -- very professional -- and the food was wonderful. I had pasta with squid in squid ink, which was delicious... More

Staying in San Polo

Neighborhood Profile
San Polo
The Rialto Bridge is the most famous sight along the Grand Canal in San Polo, smallest of Venice's six sestieri (districts) and by far the busiest neighborhood. Morning Venetians arrive to peruse the markets for fish, fruit and vegetables, while shops display goods from cheese to wine to desserts. San Silvestro and Rialto Market vaporetto (water taxi) stops add to the steady stream of foot traffic. San Polo is defined by churches including Basilica dei Frari, one of the most important churches sought by art lovers.
