Description: Venices Vecio Fritolin is a much loved, characterful little restaurant...
Venices Vecio Fritolin is a much loved, characterful little restaurant near the Rialto Bridge in Santa Croce where people have been eating traditional Venetian food for over a century. It is one of the citys few still-thriving fritolini, precursors of todays fast food eateries, popular in the 1800s with both the rich and less well off. The scrumptious historic finger food is still served, alongside masterpiece variations on other local Venetian and Italian dishes. The seafood and vegetables come daily from the nearby Rialto Markets, and are on the constantly-changing menu within hours. Whether they stumble or deliberately step onto Vecio Fritolin's pink terrazzo floor, everyone's invariably glad they did.

Going in the right direction.

We ate here on our 2nd night in Venice and were very happy. One particular dish (the courgette starter with tomato emulsion?) was actually of a Michelin standard. Congrats to the chef on that little beauty! It was deliciously light and the tomato emulsion was full of depth and flavour. This one... read more

We loved our meal at Vecio Fritolin. We found out about this restaurant from good friends and were told to be prepared to search for the restaurant. Luckily, we found it easily and were much rewarded. The service was excellent -- very professional -- and the food was wonderful. I had pasta with squid in squid ink, which was delicious... More

We walked by this place several times and it was also recommended to us by our hotel. So we decided to try out Vecio Fritolin the last night in Venice. After 7 nights in Venice we had enjoyed some wonderful meals, so Vecio Fritolin had some expectations from us. They delivered as expected, excellent service, nice tables and most importantly... Our meal at Vecio did not meet our standards. The service was very good and the staff was friendly. But the food we choose was not very appetizing and after getting a bill for over 100 dollars extremely disappointing. I would choose other restaurants in Venice to dine at.

Always good, excellent food and service. The list of Dolcis - I could have eaten all of them. Good wines. Nice and quiet atmosphere out of the fuss of Marco Polo Square. Sure there will be the fourth time during the next Biennale.

Visited here with my wife on a recommendation but were deeply disappointed. We had the house special at 40 euros each, but it just seemed to be deep fried course after deep fried course. In all, we left 130 euros lighter and feeling very queasy. The only upside were the staff who were very friendly and polite.

Vecio Fritolin was in a somewhat strange location--we missed it when we walked by the first time but it did not disappoint. The service was excellent--our waiter recommended a wine for us and it was a favorite of the trip. We enjoyed the Venetian tacos a lot! This is definitely worth a visit--it cost us 160 Euro for a bottle... More

More expensive than several places at which we ate in Venice it was default choice since a lot of restaurants were closed when we visited in August. Most of the dishes we average but they have some very good fish selections but they are expensive. The wines we had were about 15€ - good price and good quality. Staying away... More

If you are around Venice and are quite rightly afraid to get global food under an allegedly Italian label, come and taste genuine fish food in a simple but stilish environment. Good value for money, follow chef's suggestions

Staying in San Polo

Neighborhood Profile
San Polo
The Rialto Bridge is the most famous sight along the Grand Canal in San Polo, smallest of Venice's six sestieri (districts) and by far the busiest neighborhood. Morning Venetians arrive to peruse the markets for fish, fruit and vegetables, while shops display goods from cheese to wine to desserts. San Silvestro and Rialto Market vaporetto (water taxi) stops add to the steady stream of foot traffic. San Polo is defined by churches including Basilica dei Frari, one of the most important churches sought by art lovers.
