Absolutely to be avoided

I don't think I ever witnessed such outrageous behaviour by a waiter. A little girl was throwing an empty cup of ice cream in the restaurant's dustbin when a waiter told her off (quite rudely) and dispatched her to a public bin. When the girl's father showed his annoyance, the waiter shouted at him... read more

Eating in Venice means an acceptance of the fact that restaurants can serve indifferent food at higher than average prices with at best average service, knowing full well that customers are unlikely to return. The setting of this restaurant looked promising set in a square with a church as a backdrop. To be fair, the staff were perfectly friendly and... More

Loved the food here! A great place to eat in Venice and not so expensive. Served us lunch at a rather late hour without a complaint or downgrading the service.

We waited for an hour. They didn't service well and didn't answer the questions well too. And hav no excuse for late food. Even the quality of food is just so so but the price and the tax is quite high compared to the value. Please don't visit here. It's waste of time and money. Actully 1 star is too... More

The Osteria Bar Olandese Volante , it was OK, nothing special. The coffee was very good, the food not so much. There is a cover charge (coperto) of 2 euro per person, but that is the norm pretty much everywhere.

L’Olandese Volante (Flying Dutchman) is a wonderful restaurant and bar in a quiet square. We have a problem with coffee at breakfast in hotels. It usually comes from a machine and not real Italian coffee. So, always, after breakfast we find a decent cuppa. This restaurant really hit the spot. Good coffee, with a small jug of hot water so... Sorry to say this was the biggest disappointment of our 4 day trip. Cover charge 2euros, service charge 12percent neither of which was on the display menu. A bottle of water 5euros. The food edible only. The waiters pressure you to have the catch of the day. AVOID.

Like others, I wish I had checked Tripadvisor before eating here. The food was mediocre and the service poor. But the kicker was the bread. Where we were sitting, we could see them take the rolls out of a plastic bag to place is a bread basket. The breadsticks were in plastic wrapping, and when we did not eat them,... More

The food is ok. Probably the nicest food you can get in the tourist area. Don't aspect the great Italian kitchen. But good value for money.

Staying in Castello

Neighborhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighborhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
