This small medieval town on Lake Orta is a great place to stay in the lake region. The town is not crowded with tourists, though it was busier during the day on the weekend with day trippers. It's a charming place to visit for the day but to really enjoy the town you should stay overnight so you can enjoy... More

Absolutely loved this quaint little medieval town with its cobbled narrow streets. There is a good choice of places to eat and also shops to buy picnic type food. There is no supermarket as such. It is also traffic free so you have to park your car outside the pedestrianised zone. Lovely atmosphere at night . Loved it.

We first came to Orta SG in July 2011 straight from Milan airport in our hire car. It was on a whim that we decided to 'pop in' to the most westerly of The Italian Lakes on our way to lake Como. Our first view was from Sacre Monte of the Lake and Island and then we walked down to... More

I really recommend a visit to Orta San Guilio. While it is crowded in July and August, it is absolutely charming and pleasant in the spring (and I presume autumn) months.

Large square overlooking the lake surrounded by mostly restored medieval buildings - lots of cafes, restaurants and shops. Lovely church and cobblestoned streets. Touristy but well worth a visit. Short ferry ride to the delightful Isola San Guilio.

Visited this delightful and largely undiscovered UNESCO town as part of a tour by Maggiore Discovery from Baveno/Stresa. The pedestrianised streets (park at top of hill) are pretty and quaint, with loads of photo opportunities! We visited on a Saturday when there were a number of weddings - the village makes a lovely backdrop. The waterfront has shady seating to... More

The whole town is an art treasure, small winding streets and buildings dating back centuries. Can get rather crowded with day trippers so go early and avoid Sundays

and always am left without a very pleasant experience. We have traveled throughout Italy extensively, and I am not sure why, but this place I guess is just a little too quiet. There is no local life obvious, unlike, for example, the towns on the Cinque Terra or the hill towns in Tuscany. The town is a bit run down,... More
