Nice experience.

We had dinner in the fresh and calm courtyard on a monday night, and ordered what our landlady from the b&b had suggested: tris di primi, mostarda con grana, torta elvezia. Very typical local food, tasty, rustic and well done. The homely red wine was decent, as the price: €30 p/p.

the place is not that big. if they have some 50 seats - thats it. you sit outside partly under transparent roof in a garden atmosphere. call for reservation in advance - we were lucky to come early enough to find one of the two not reserved tables... they have two english and one german menus - making things easier... I was looking for a casual place with excellent food for lunch in lovely Mantua (Mantova) and Trattoria Due Cavallini was just that. Being first time in Mantua and reading so much about it I opted for the typical-written-about-in-all-guides dishes - tortelli di zucca (tortelli with yellow squash) and stracotto d’asino (donkey meat cooked till meat is very tender and... A small family restaurant. Excellent service and food. Mostly locals dining - a good sign in our opinion. Note that they open around 7:45. Would go again in a flash.

This restaurant was suggested by my host : very nice "trattoria", nice old style service (humor without too much smiles, like my grandfather did) and pretty large. Traditional menu : "maccheroncini al torchio con stracotto) (meat cooked in wine sauce and spices, so soft)", "stracotto e polenta", "agnoli (sort of ravioli with meat in brodo" or with butter and "salvia",... We really enjoyed our traditional Italian meal at this trattoria, including tortellini zucca and maccheroni stracotto, and some good local wine. Its a bit off the beaten track but worth the short walk from the centre. its not expensive and its open late. If we are in Mantua again we will be back.

Here for Sunday lunch we opted to dine in the delightful wisteria-covered pergola at the back of the trattoria where a dozen or so white tables and chairs are elegantly covered with white table cloths(see photo) We both chose a regional agnoli as primo (similar to tortellini) mine with tomato sauce, my companios with the cream sauce. Both were very... More

We found out about this restaurant from an article in the Guardian, and what better way to spend lunchtime on a grey April day? This is a proper local restaurant selling local food to local people - mainly businessmen on their lunch break. The food was simple yet delicious. For a starter we enjoyed salamin and pickled onion/olive/artichoke. After the... More

We were excited to try this place, which is a little off the beaten path in Mantova. We headed in on a rainy night in November, and we were about 10 minutes early for their 7:30 opening time. They invited us to come in and dry off anyway, so we did. We ate pumpkin ravioli and the maccheroni. Both were... More
