Great pastries, even for Italian standards

Penso is a very modest-looking pasticceria in one little street in Trieste. However, it has become legendary due to its great selection of pastries. Trying to figure out what was all that buzz about, I tried the Sacher cake and I must say that it was one of the best I have ever had. The rum cake... read more

After reading about this place I felt it was an absolutely must for someone with a sweet tooth as big as mine. On our first attempt this place was closed but on the second day we were more lucky. The place is small and heaven for someone who like pastries. I was a little bit disappointed that there were not... More

I always feel really welcome when visiting, my Italian isn't great but they always try and help me with my Italian or speak a little English. The nougat is to die for, and makes great presents for the office. They sell a lovely range of chocolates, cakes and desserts and are so helpful. On my last trip I bought a... More

I will be visiting Trieste in the summer and upon looking at this reviews of you hotels and restaurant, this PASTICCERIA PENSO hit my eye because I might be related to the owner. I live in NY and my mother last name was Penso and she had relatives there. So I will be visiting this place for the goodies and... More

We stopped Trieste for about two hours, while we're heading to Ljubljana. This place was in my check list, and we loved it. It's clean and prices are very reasonable.

This bakery was near our hotel, Residence Liberty, and when returning to the hotel we would look for the green awning in order to go in an pick up some goodies for our room. The owner was very friendly and welcoming.

Ordered a birthday cake with a dedication written in chocolate on top. I was concerned that the dedication would not look too good, as it contained some diacritics, but they got it just right, and the cake looked and tasted great too. Antonello has been very helpful, and since we arrived in Trieste late in the evening, after the pasticceria... More

There is no birthday, anniversary, celebration without a "Penso cake" in my family! Definitely the best in my opinion. I strongly recommend the "crostata": tell what you want on it and the size. Do not ask for gelatin on it:it is tasteless and useful only to increase the weight (and the price).

I truly enjoyed this cafe, It is a very traditional cafe, not a modern one. Go for breakfast, or for a sit down in the afternoon.

The pastries and chocolates here were fresh and delicious. This is just a shop, but the are plenty of benches by the water a couple of blocks away, if you want to sit and eat.
