I can't believe I lived in Modena for 5 years without ever going to Ermes. Now that I don't live there anymore, I made the effort to eat there while on holiday. Ermes was so accommodating towards me and my active 22month old, making sure she had something suitable to eat too, and they modified a dish especially for us... More

Just like having an Italian mum cooking your favorite dish, great atmosphere and tasty food, the garlic infused pork ribs and pasta dishes were so good.

In my opinion, Osteria da Ermes embodies the true essence of Italy and our experience there left us smiling for the rest of the day. This should be the top restaurant in the area! We turned up 15 minutes early and waited outside until Ermes started inviting people in. We were sat at the same table as two lovely older... More

We had to try the restaurant after reading reviews. What a delight it turned out to be. We arrived toward the end of lunch service and had to wait until a table was available. We then sat at a communal table, rather simple but homely. There is no menu, the owner asked us what we would like. Fortunately for us... More

Everything has been said. Unfortunately, if you like what you read and fancy visiting Ermes, you have a little over 9 months to do so as Ermes has announced at the end of the year he will be retiring - after 50 years at the helm.

By judging the line of italians outside, we wanted to be there. Then, we enjoyed the genuine and rich smell of good food from the ever slamming kitchen doors, and the merry athmosphere, and the huge huge portions! Tagliatelle was awesome and golden yellow, pleasantly solid like the italians love it, the sauce was divine! We ordered the local Lambrusco... More

We were stumbling around Modena on an incredibly hot day, looking for lunch, and read in the guidebook that this was a worthwhile visit. Nothing could have prepared us for what was in store, certainly not the nondescript door in a residential street. Once inside however, we were greeted by a giant Modenese man who spoke no English, realised we... More

Me and my brother saw this restaurant on a travel show, the minute the program was over we knew we must get here... Took us a few month, but we made it. Spent four hours on a Saturday, just drinking bottle after bottle of lambrusco - as they flew threw the air around us... Dish after dish, tray after tray....... More

This is one of the eating institutions of Modena. Family run and as individual as you can imagine. Communal eating is the game here. Unless you are in a large-ish group of six or more; you'll likely be seated next to strangers. Not too worry as the friendliness and informality make it feel like your own mamma's kitchen, complemented by... More
