Meets expectations

This is a good trattoria, well attended by locals. If you go without a reservation, get there before 8:00. We got the last table and many were turned away. They serve the classics, well made with good service. Everything was good, but nothing stood out.

If you are looking for over priced small portions with terrible descibtions of what is to come... this is your place! The waiter thanked me so many times for my money I was sure he saw my disappointed face. I thaught nuvelle cuisine portions had nothing to do with 'tratoria italiana'.

We had the traditional tortellini in broth and gnocchi Bolognese. Excellent!!!! Misti Salad was fresh and semifreddo with strawberries and balsamic a lovely surprise. Well trained and attentive staff. Couldn't fault this restaurant at all.

Da Gianni serves the classic regional food of Emilia-Romagna that makes Bologna famous all over Italy. The food is extraordinary and the service is excellent. The wait staff takes a professional interest in seeing that you dine well. There is rarely an empty table at Da Gianni so we always make a reservation before we get to Bologna. Diners come... More

Off the beaten path, down an alley, we figured, it must be a great place. Excellent food, fine staff, and genuinely good Bologna fare.

Recommended by a friend, went here at 10 til 8, got the last unreserved table on a Thur eve, so best to reserve. Very friendly staff, speak some English, mostly locals there. Appetizers the Spuma de Mortadella-- a light delicious mousse, I had the Cutatello- special Parma ham, melt I your mouth consistency, certainly the best Procuitto I have had.... More

The waiters were friendly, the service good, the food was average though. Quite a few Italians there but in the main it was tourists. It felt to me a bit like the kind of Italian restaurants I'd find back in the UK, all that was missing was O Sole Mio playing in the background. It's not off the beaten track... More

Trattoria da Gianni is tucked in an alley, close to the market region of Bologna. Traditional Bolognese fare, simple and delicious. The service was very helpful, even for us non Italian speakers. Most of the patrons were local. Dined there twice, on the last day we were feeling already local. Try the espuma de mortadella, mortadella grigliatta, and tortellini balanzone.
