Off the beaten path, down an alley, we figured, it must be a great place. Excellent food, fine staff, and genuinely good Bologna fare.

Recommended by a friend, went here at 10 til 8, got the last unreserved table on a Thur eve, so best to reserve. Very friendly staff, speak some English, mostly locals there. Appetizers the Spuma de Mortadella-- a light delicious mousse, I had the Cutatello- special Parma ham, melt I your mouth consistency, certainly the best Procuitto I have had.... More

The waiters were friendly, the service good, the food was average though. Quite a few Italians there but in the main it was tourists. It felt to me a bit like the kind of Italian restaurants I'd find back in the UK, all that was missing was O Sole Mio playing in the background. It's not off the beaten track... More

Trattoria da Gianni is tucked in an alley, close to the market region of Bologna. Traditional Bolognese fare, simple and delicious. The service was very helpful, even for us non Italian speakers. Most of the patrons were local. Dined there twice, on the last day we were feeling already local. Try the espuma de mortadella, mortadella grigliatta, and tortellini balanzone.

The best meal we had in Bologna and that's saying a lot. Tortellini in brodo, tagliatelle with ragu, and a delicious antipasto mista with mortadella mousse. Service was attentive, and the place was nice looking, not too elegant, not too down and dirty. Highly recommended.

we had a dinner for 6 of varying ages and tastes and we all had a wonderful evening, asparagus risotto, tagliatelle ragu, porc with apple and mustard - everyone was happy and the waiters were friendly, helpful and knowledgable. We went back 2 weeks later with different friends and ate different dishes - definitely one to go back to on... More

We had walked a few hours that Saturday morning, were hungry and this trattoria just happened to be on our way. We entered the trattoria just after it had opened. We did not expect anything but what a nice surprise it was. Great, beautiful food. Most of the tables were reserved for the lunch so make a reservation if you... More

My husband and I stumbled upon Trattoria Gianni 8 years ago. We returned to Bologna a few days ago hoping to find it again - not having remembered the name. We did, however, remember the amazing lunch we enjoyed there which included tortellini en broto and gnocchi in tomato sauce. While getting our bearings in town, we stumbled upon it... More
