Indeed a great Carbonara.

This restaurant is frequented by tourists as well as Italiens. I had the praisen Carbonara, which was fantastic. My sister had the veal in marsala sauce, which was also perfect. She got a little green salat as a side dish. Unfortunately she was not offered any oil or venegar. Also we asked for the... read more

Bottom line- the carbonara pasta is great and portion size huge! Go there for the pasta. Service and attitude was not so great. We did our best to be friendly but it seemed we were not welcome there. Very slow service almost to the point of ignoring us. Sadly it ruined our overall view of the place.

A culinary experience of this type is what makes it a true Roman experience. Generous portions, excellent service, sublime food all in a no - frills and familial environment.

I consider myself an experienced traveller so its not all about the food, or even the atmosphere....but often more about the people...or the service. I searched diligently for somewhere close to our accomodation in our last night in Rome and saw this had good reviews and from the pictures looked like great food We had booked for 7...they were no... Excellent service, divine food and wine, and affordable for the amount of food we were served! We've read that the best Carbonara is here at Antica Da Carlone, and we must concur! The platters of pasta are definitely enough for two people if they are accustomed to eating a moderate amount. Our daughter ordered Spaghetti al Pomodoro, and we all... More

I completely agree with the comments about portion size. We each ordered a meal and only half of us were able to completely finish our portions. But they were each tasty! The carbonara and ravioli were both exceptional and we lingered for a long time eating, drinking and talking in this treasure of a restaurant. This did not feel "touristy"... More

Ok. I've always wondered how Italians can eat three courses especially when the pasta is so huge! This restaurant was the same! Amazing pasta carbonara but way to big for one person. I totally recommend sharing a pasta course then Sharing a Main. And I'm a big eater. My wife and I shared 2 bottles of water, 1 bottle of... More

Located in a more a more family oriented section of Trastevere, Da Carlone's blew my husband and I away. Having eaten in Italy for 10 years (for research), this is one of the best places I have ever eaten in Italy. While many of the meat dishes on the menu depend on personal tastes, the pasta dishes, each one, are... More

Seemed to be full of locals which I take as a very good sign. Pasta was excellent and the wine was good too. The service left a little to be desired but wouldn't stop me from going back. It is very warm inside, I recommend getting a seat outside.

On a lovely little side street on the quieter side of Trastevere district, this is a very traditional family-run trattoria. It's not as cheap as it was 10 years ago, but the quality of the food is if anything better. Avoid the bruschette at 4 euros a piece and go for the reasonably priced and delicious pasta dishes, or the... More

Staying in Trastevere

Neighborhood Profile
Trastevere
Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.
