I lived in Rome for 4 years - Carbonara is one of my favourite dishes and I can't believe I just found this place while on vacation in 2015. It was the best Carbonara in the city hands down - highly recommended - I also recommend sharing a plate as the portions are HUGE - the mozzarella, prosciutto and focaccia... More

We had a Sunday family lunch here and you definitely have to book the table in advance if you do not want to enjoy their delicoius carbonara. My husband had it and the portion was humengous, and it tasted amazingly! You will not have the space for a secondo though. Instead I had gnocchi with sausage and ribs and also... More

We ate at this trattoria twice on a recent visit to Rome. It was just around the corner from our Guest House. We arrived on a Saturday evening without booking and they were complete but still managed to squeeze us into a little table for two up from the main dining room. While some might have thought this table uncomfortable... More

I love Travestere so I gravitate towards more local places hidden in neighbourhoods. We arrived quite late at 9.40 and they still managed to fit us in. Ordered the house speciality of carbonara, and oh my was it amazing!! Done in traditional way, no sign of cream as seen in normal 'international' versions abroad. It was delicious! So was the... Any of the fresh, made in-house pasta dishes are winners, for a second plate try the amazing Romano style beef tail. Great location, typical Romano service (in other words they leave you alone to enjoy your meal). Reservations are almost always a must.

We lived in Italy for 8 years and are always looking for a place that feels real. This ristorante feels real - Mama in the kitchen and all. They were welcoming and didn't rush us. The ricotta and spinach ravioli with artichoke sauce was super, as was the pasta with zucchini flowers. Good bread, too - unlike a lot of... More

Good simple pastas, friendly service, good wine. What's not to like? Definitely a place I would return to. As an aside, we had reservations at several high-end restaurants in Rome, but opted for the ones I reviewed instead and are sure it was the right choice for us. We live in the San Francisco Bay area and are used to... More

The one star isn't a rating of restaurant quality, it's the overall rating of a highly recommended place. The service was awful and the food was very average. We had the carbonara and had obvious high expectations, it's a shame they were not met. When asking for a table for two we were met with clear amusement that we could... More

Staying in Trastevere

Neighborhood Profile
Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.
