Do as the Romans do

When in Rome jump on the tram and join the locals a little further away from the usual tourist trail. This place is busy each time we visit, this being our fourth trip. After a long day exploring the Colluseum, Palatine Hill and Forum the last thing you want to worry about is cooking. This friendly little restaurant was recommended by our landlady. Although everything was in Italian (what do you expect when staying in a suburb of Rome) nothing was too much trouble for our waiter to help us through the menu... More

Our daughter, who is studying in Rome and living in Monteverde, recommended this restaurant that locals frequent. Kitchy design and great food. Well worth a visit.

A gem of a place. Helpful, attentive staff guide you through the Italian menu and the daily specials board. Food is superb with typical Roman dishes including Puntarelle alla Romana - chicory with anchovies, olive oil, garlic, vinegar and salt. Osso Buco and seafood salad are excellent.

Recommended by Elisabetta, our B&B owner, we couldn't help but keep going back to this place. Loved the atmosphere, the attentive and patient staff and of course, the food and wine. Not only do they do massive pours per glass, but they also have artisanal beers available.

Retro 2 was close to where I was staying and had been recommended by my landlady and other guests. It was excellent. I was travelling alone for a few days and they made me feel very welcome. The specials were a delight and the friendly waters explained everything and recommended wine. The place gets really busy after 9 on a... More

This restaurant was very close to where we were staying, and so it was an obvious selection as we were all somewhat tired after the journey. The decor is interesting and attractive, a mix of 1950s, 60s and 70s styles which all work very well together to create a pleasant dining room. The service was attentive, very helpful to a... More

My friend and I were in Rome in Aug. 2013. Our first night there we went to Retro 02 at the recommendation of our B&B host. She called and got us reservations, which turned out to be a good thing because it was packed. We were probably the only tourists there – it was packed with locals who obviously came... More

Enjoyed this hip modern what i would call trattoria. Our primo, a pasta toscana, was superb. The secondo a good and creative approach to porchetta. The staff really hustles. The decor- hip retro-is fun. There were two very large tables the night we were there...so typical noisy trattoria in that sense. A bit pricey for what it is, but we... More

Wonderfully distinctive restaurant; the food is *excellent*. The dishes are very well prepared and sophisticated without at all being fussy. At the same time has a very relaxed, home-style character. The service is very good too.
