Do as the Romans do

When in Rome jump on the tram and join the locals a little further away from the usual tourist trail. This place is busy each time we visit, this being our fourth trip. We first read about it in cool places to eat in Rome. It didn't disappoint back in 2009, and it is still packed today with... read more

...and in my opinion that is a very good thing. We were staying in a b&b within walking distance and visited on a Thursday night after a flight in from London so by the time we arrived it was 10pm ... not late in Italian terms but I was still a little surprised that it was packed. And best of... More

Our landlady eats here and recommended it highly. Waiters were excellent, explaining the Italian written menu board to us in English, very friendly, helpful and enthusiastic. The food is very imaginative, delicious and fresh. Loved it. We ate outside 3 times, only downside is if seated near smokers.

A perfect evening - dining al fresco with friends, good food, wine and superb wait staff. As mentioned the menu is in Italian however our waiter, Valerio, was excellent at explaining all the dishes and then helping to choose a dish fitting to your taste. A relaxed and fun atmosphere with perfect weather to boot. One of the most memorable... More

Friendly waiters, the menu changes very frequently based on local supplies. We were helped by the waiters with food and wine recommendations which were all excellent. We ate there 3 times on our short trip for dinner and every time it was fantastic quality and value. Very imaginative menu for both meat, fish and vegetarian options.

After a long day exploring the Colluseum, Palatine Hill and Forum the last thing you want to worry about is cooking. This friendly little restaurant was recommended by our landlady. Although everything was in Italian (what do you expect when staying in a suburb of Rome) nothing was too much trouble for our waiter to help us through the menu... More

Our daughter, who is studying in Rome and living in Monteverde, recommended this restaurant that locals frequent. Kitchy design and great food. Well worth a visit.

A gem of a place. Helpful, attentive staff guide you through the Italian menu and the daily specials board. Food is superb with typical Roman dishes including Puntarelle alla Romana - chicory with anchovies, olive oil, garlic, vinegar and salt. Osso Buco and seafood salad are excellent.

Recommended by Elisabetta, our B&B owner, we couldn't help but keep going back to this place. Loved the atmosphere, the attentive and patient staff and of course, the food and wine. Not only do they do massive pours per glass, but they also have artisanal beers available.

Retro 2 was close to where I was staying and had been recommended by my landlady and other guests. It was excellent. I was travelling alone for a few days and they made me feel very welcome. The specials were a delight and the friendly waters explained everything and recommended wine. The place gets really busy after 9 on a... More
