This is located in a room that holds less than 10 tables. It appears to be a sitting room or library of an old house; it is a cozy room with an old, ornate masonry fireplace. There is a very small bar with 3-4 seats in addition to the tables. Though there were some other tourists in shorts and t-shirts,... More

I am conflicted about writing this review. Pipero al Rex is SO good, and SO undiscovered, I want to protect this tiny hidden jewel of Rome from the tourist hordes that descend upon the city. So, Pipero is situated in the somewhat shabby hotel Rex, in a less-than-desirable location. It doesn't have the jaw-dropping view of La Pergola, or the... More

The restaurant is in the Rex hotel near the Termini station. The hotel does not look like it has a restaurant of this calibre hidden inside, and the number of tables in the restaurant is quite limited. But of the four very fine restaurants we have visited in Rome over the last year, Imago, Metamorfosi, La Terrazza del Eden and... More

Alex Pipero, the owner, greeted us as we entered this very classy 6-table restaurant to which the Michelin Guide gave one star. One star is what we thought is the least it deserves. Everything we had was excellent but the pigeon was outstanding. The atmosphere, service, and food were all worthy of our 240€ bill. We thought the same dinner... More

This one of kind restaurant is located in a slightly shady hotel in the definitely shady Train Terminal section of Rome. The 16 seats are set in a room that would easily hold 30 in NYC. The room is lighted the way every restaurant should be. Focused spots on the food and low ambient light. The food is slightly avant-guard... More

Intimate setting with inventive takes on traditional Italian dishes. Carbonara was the best I've ever had!! Great value for what you get.

A visit to Pipero al Rex is quite an experience. We walked over from our hotel, The St. Regis. This restaurant is located in a somewhat dreary hotel in a somewhat dreary neighborhood, but this dreary set-up only heightens the drama when you enter this restaurant. The maitre d' was very welcoming and took wonderful care of hus for the... More

I choose this restaurant because it's a Michelin star. We have not been disappointed. The meal was just excellent. I have got special diet and the chef accommodated his menu for me exceptionally and I was really please to have the opportunity to eat there and to have the tasting menu. This is now our favorite restaurant in Rome. You... More

Staying in Esquilino

Neighborhood Profile
Old school vibe from the very beginning is the only way to describe the Esquilino neighborhood. The Esquilino takes pride in being one of the oldest areas in Rome for its key location on one of the city’s famous seven hills. From an ancient neighborhood to its modern incarnation as a multicultural hub, Esquilino always has something going on—polyglot vendors debate street artists while kids play pick-up basketball games. Look around you: this area isn’t like the historic center. Liberty architecture, large piazzas, and long boulevards mix with archaic arches, secret side alleys, and beautiful churches like Santa Maria Maggiore.
