Great food & environment

Ordered the Bacini alla Gricia and it was scrumptious! Tons of bacon in it which was the best part. Order a similar dish, carbonara at another restaurant and they had maybe half the bacon in it, so Vecchia was great. I recommend it for sure.

Spaghetti with red sauce was too much sauce, pizza was very thin and sauggy, service was not what we expected. Thier house wine that they recommended was no good, so we a bottle from the wine list, finished half our plates and then the wine bottle showed up. We had to ask for water bottles 3 time before the brought... More

We visited Trattoria Vecchia Roma twice while staying in Rome. If we had stayed in Rome longer we would have visited more. Extremely good food at a very reasonable price. I would definitely recommend Vecchia Roma but suggest making a booking as it gets really busy, with locals and tourists packing it out at lunchtime and in the evening.

Following a recommendation we booked a table at this below street level restaurant (forget it if you cannot manage stairs!) Our welcome was a bit casual, not sure they had noted our booking but we did get a table. Other people were turned away during our meal. Very noisy and busy throughout so service was not attentive but food was... More

Very good food, nice and fast service. Lots of locals eating there, which is always a good sign... Without a reservation it's almost impossible unless you arrive at 7PM Liked the pizzas more than the pastas.

The food was great and staff were friendly. We were lucky to sneak in just after 7 without a reservation, but witnessed staff turning many people away who came in after us without a reservation. We reserved for the next night as there were many dishes we wanted to try and loved the atmosphere. Clearly popular with locals and tourists.

Starters weren't great. My spaghetti main looked like a bowl of congealed mess with lots of really fatty bacon. My girlfriends squid was extremely rubbery. Service was good though.

After trying so many touristic and overpriced restaurants in Rome, on our last night, just as we were about to give up the hope of finding a nice local place with good food, we found Vecchia Roma. Thank God! Finally an Italian restaurant! And there are mostly Italians inside! And the food... We couldn't get enough of it. Me and... More

I must agree with mostly all the reviews before mine. This restaurant is amazing. Like many places in Rome, from the outside the restaurant doesnt look like much. We are freaking lucky that we were able to show up and only had to wait 2 min to be seated. But we saw so many others get turned away or were... More

Staying in Esquilino

Neighborhood Profile
Esquilino
Old school vibe from the very beginning is the only way to describe the Esquilino neighborhood. The Esquilino takes pride in being one of the oldest areas in Rome for its key location on one of the city’s famous seven hills. From an ancient neighborhood to its modern incarnation as a multicultural hub, Esquilino always has something going on—polyglot vendors debate street artists while kids play pick-up basketball games. Look around you: this area isn’t like the historic center. Liberty architecture, large piazzas, and long boulevards mix with archaic arches, secret side alleys, and beautiful churches like Santa Maria Maggiore.
