Suggestion from Taxi Driver

Our driver suggested this restaurant. We sat outside at a small table. We had a reservation for 7:15. Even though we were the first one seated it took a while for the waiter to appear. My husband had a spaghetti in garlic sauce with tuna. He enjoyed the different flavor from the tuna. I had the... read more

In a city where it has become hard to distinguish restaurants truly serving local food from well-disguised tourist traps, Matriciana was a refreshing, wonderful surprise. In fact, we stumbled upon it while walking to a different restaurant recommended by our hotel. Needless to say, we never made it to our intended destination! Matriciana provided us with excellent food and attentive... More

I booked 'La Matriiana' for my daughters 21st birthday by email in advance of our visit to Rome. They reserved the best table in the house for us. The food was superb and the bill was very reasonable, the owner even made my daughter a cake. If we ever return to Rome I'll book a table there again. Thank for... More

In Rome to celebrate our 40th anniversary, we asked our local tour guide for a dinner recommendation - and he suggested La Matriciana. It was a short walk from our hotel, and we were there a few minutes before it opened at 7 pm - without a reservation. We were glad we went early - without a reservation, we would... More

My husband had the turbot and I had the baccalau, and they were delicious! We sat outside and it was nice. You will get the street artists wanting to play you some music, which my 3-year old enjoyed very much, and some other street vendors, but the food was amazing!

We arrived on a rainy afternoon to a restaurant filled with Romans enjoying business lunches. Some alone, some with companions. To me this is the sign of a reliably good restaurant. Business people meeting with clients. Service was very professional, helpful and warm. We had two of the daily pasta specials, raviolone ( two or three giant ravioli stuffed with... More

not far from the main train station this restaurant is a famous one in rome. Classic roman dishes in a nice ambiance, good style and good service. We went for lunch and there was a lot of natural light coming from outside as there is no building in front. very pleasant. We had classic pasta dishes like carbonara and amatriciana,... More

Right opposite the opera house, the matriciana pasta is delicious, saucy and tasty. I tried the crostino with grilled pecorino cheese and black truffle, this is not roman but tasty and with plenty of truffle, I was not expecting the toast bread though, I would have preferred a slice of traditional Italian bread. The waiter was extremely attentive for a... More

I highly recommend the mussels and clam sautéed .... Came back the second time just for it .... We also had veal, ham&melon, fish and pasta ... all the dishes were good and servings reasonable as well. Service was good and attentive.

This piece of story of the Italian restaurant (open since 1875 or so) is the excellence for the Italian pasta (but not only) superb Matriciana or Cacio e pepe toppings on maccheroni, tonnarelli... Other preferential seasonal dishes are the Carciofi alla giudea, or the Puntarelle alla romana. Starters with ham and mozzarella di bufala chees are top. Price is avarege... More

Staying in Esquilino

Neighborhood Profile
Esquilino
Old school vibe from the very beginning is the only way to describe the Esquilino neighborhood. The Esquilino takes pride in being one of the oldest areas in Rome for its key location on one of the city’s famous seven hills. From an ancient neighborhood to its modern incarnation as a multicultural hub, Esquilino always has something going on—polyglot vendors debate street artists while kids play pick-up basketball games. Look around you: this area isn’t like the historic center. Liberty architecture, large piazzas, and long boulevards mix with archaic arches, secret side alleys, and beautiful churches like Santa Maria Maggiore.
