Simply superb!

Just perfect. Following a recommendation of a true expert in food and tastes from Italy, we went to la Gensola for our final dinner in Rome. We were looking for a nice ambiance, and good food, hoping not to have to compromise between the two. The restaurant exceeded our expectations. Not only the food was original and of highest quality,... More

We have eaten at Osteria La Gensola twice during our 5 days in Rome. It is an excellent restaurant, especially if you want to be adventurous in your eating. Friendly, attentive staff, three nice rooms with each having an intimate feel and excellently prepared food. The first night, we were more conservative: fried artichoke (the best we found during our... More

We had high hopes for this spot as it came with a very high recommendation. Sadly, it was the worst restaurant experience I've had in my many, many visits to Rome. We were ignored and passed over for a group of 12 locals. Cold service and our second course took an hour and 15 minutes. We left sad and frustrated.... More

A great osteria in Trastevere very close to the Tiber river. You will find all the roman classic, but you especially have to try the fish which is fantastic. I would recommend the sea bass in salt with some fried artichokes. Nice atmosphere But you have to book in advance

Nice place in the other side of Trastevere. A Sicilian Roman mix, very delicious. We sampled the swordfish rolls with excellent caponata and polpettine di tonno. They offered us moscardini and panelle on the house! Nice wine list, good food. Prices a bit high, but it's a fish restaurant in the center of Rome. Will go back!

We were told that this restaurant was excellent. we had tried to go without a reservation in early April and there was no room, so we reserved for the next night. Food was disappointingly average, and pricey. Service was lackluster. I do not recommend it.

Our second visit to La Gensola was just as good or even better than last time we visited 3 years ago which shows the sustainability in quality and experience. Full of locals and only select tourists this is a place off the busy streets of Trastevere where you are guaranteed only the best of roman cuisine...Our waiter's recommendations on the... More

We arrived at 2 for a relaxed lunch and were the only people there, my wife and I. Priceless experience. The owners daughter personlly served us and we went with every one of her recommendations for typical sicilian food. She split appetizers for us so we could try everything and it was the BEST! Scallops cooked perfectly, swordfish involtini, tuna... More

An elegant seafood restaurant which will offer you a very pleasant evening. The ambiance is classical, and the food is quite good. Trastevere hosts an exceedingly heterogenous collection of restaurants and eateries, ranging from the dreadful to the genuinely superb. This restaurant is decidedly in the upper end of the spectrum, if not at the acme. This place cane be... More

Staying in Trastevere

Neighborhood Profile
Trastevere
Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.
