I knew little about Matera before I went and, suffice to say, I was truly amazed at this beautiful city. Built into the rock face, a lot of the old town (known as the Sassi) is housed in caves, which were the original dwellings for local people. Up until quite recently this town was considered a... read more

This is certainly one of the more scenic Locations of any Restaurant in Matera. There is both indoor and courtyard seating and as we were there in August we sat outside. The Service was very professional, perhaps not very personable, but efficient and polite. The Food was very good and the Restaurant is considered to be one of the best... More

We liked this place a lot. A beautiful room in a cave, lovely tables, excellent service and VERY good food (we are tough graders and rarely give 5 stars). As we tend to do, we shared one each of an appetizer, a primi, and a secondi. First a wonderful rolled rabbit with grilled red peppers, then lovely orrichetti with peso... More

Our experience at Baccanti was wonderful. We were first impressed at how beautiful the restaurant was and then very pleased with our delicious meals. The food was superbly prepared and the wine list was medium priced and fairly extensive. Our server, who may have been the owner, was very helpful and friendly. We had a great time and will definitely... More

We visited on the recommendation of our hotel. In the caves, this is a great experience. The service was excellent, and the waiter assisted us with the local wine selections. He also offered to split our pPrimi for us since we were not in the mood for a large meal. We started with the local favorite, which is a Fave... More

My wife and I dined here during our bike tour of Puglia. Our hotel recommended the restaurant and we are very glad that we went. It is built into the caves of Sasso Caveoso and the ambiance was terrific. The restaurant staff was friendly and attentive and the food delicious. I had a pasta starter and my wife started with... The service was impeccable - courteous, friendly and professional. The waiters were efficient and knowledgeable. The menu choice was limited but comprehensive. The wine that was recommended was outstanding. The portions were generous. Perhaps the flavour of the main course could have been improved. An experience dining in a large cave - but with every modern facility. I would go... More

Friendly staff and generally good food make this a nice place to eat. Menu fairly typical of the area with some regional dishes and some general Italian food. As probably inevitable here the tables are all for tourists

Baccanti was recommended to us by our hotel. It was the first meal we enjoyed in Matera and it was one of the best. The food was prepared with care and the recommend regional wine was perfect with our food choices. The restaurant was situated in one of the ancient 'sassi' (ancient cave dwellings). The indirect lighting and the flickering... More

In a rock cave in the UNESCO city of Matera. To start; Podolico affumicato ai trucioli di castagno con noci, insalatina di campo e carcifini sott'olio di zia Giuseppina. Smoked Podolico beef served with walnuts, wild leaf salad, homemade mini artichokes in olive oil. Eu8 not very interesting. Main course Baccala olive nere di Ferrandina e scarola in cialda di...
