Local, very welcoming, good pasta

We went here on our last night because it looked very local. The staff was very sweet and welcoming and even thought it was packed with locals on a Saturday night, the service was very attentive. The Aglianico de Vulture wine was great with our pasta dishes. I had a thick homemade spaghetti like... read more

Matera is a place Picasso and Braque would have built if they had been architects. The hotels, homes, churches, piazzas and restaurants piled on top of each other and linked by winding narrow ancient stone paths in a wild vertical cubist design of greys and brown earth tones (at least in mid-winter). Along with the visual pleasures there are also... More

The food was great, and the service was personal. One of the owners served us in person, and was a pleasure to chat with.

On our last night in Matera we stopped by a ristorante that our cousin Joe had dined at when he visited in June, called Il Cantucci. Joe had told the owner ,Vito, to expect us in a few months, and that we would say the code word, "arugula" to identify ourselves. The ristorante, though not large, is capable of seating... More

We were very disappointed as the choice was extremely limited - which could have been displayed outside instead of the quite rich menu... Food was ok but ricotta salata in the pasta sauce was almost invisible. Service was ok but not particularly friendly.

While service was great, the food was not. Good food but small portions. Nothing that special. Not at all the excellence I recall from when I dined there 7 years ago under old management.

My husband and I recently spent three nights in Matera. As people who love food we asked our hotel for recommendations and were given the name of this lovely restaurant under new ownership. We visited without reservation & were found a lovely table in the small but welcoming restaurant. The food was very tasty & different from what we had... More

We happened upon this restaurant by chance and delighted we did. Everything about it is good, from the menu, ambience, and excellent food, served in a polite and classy manner. I hope the two people running it are extremely successful - they deserve to be. Please give it a try and you won't be disappointed.

We did not fully understand the menu and just asked for recommendations from the waiter! Everything was good and appears that these were typical local dishes. The restaurant was busy with local people and the atmosphere was excellent. Hopefully this restaurant will be there next year when we go!

My wife and I took our three kids in Il Cantuccio tonight wanting a quick but good meal as it is our last night in Italy. The food was fantastic and Vito coped wonderfully despite being on his own due to losing a staff member through sickness. We had a choice of antipasti including the wonderful carpaccio and then went... More
