My husband and I wandered into Il Cantuccio on our last day of holiday in Italy. I wish we'd gone sooner. First off - this isn't like entering a typical restaurant. It feels more like entering someone's home, which happens to have lots of dining tables in it. We were there on a Monday and the only person working was... More

Whenever I visit Matera, I always make sure to have dinner at Il Cantuccio and I am never disappointed. Tonight's visit was equally satisfying. We started with the fave e cicoria, a local specialty of fava bean puree with wild chicory that was perfectly prepared and full of flavour. We then had fantastic entrée--pork scaloppine with sultanas for me and... More

I Had taken 27 Australians to lunch here and they all agreed it was like being at an Italian Sunday lunch back home. The small goods where all made by the owners and the ricotta was made 2 hours before we got there and was so creamy and delicious. The hand made pastas where so flavorful and delicious, then the... Our hotel suggested Il Cantuccio for dinner, and we were very pleased with the recommendation. The room is intimate and quiet, and our pasta was delicious. Located in the historic district of Matera, this restaurant is a great choice for travelers interested in excellent local fare served in a lovely, tranquil environment.

I was so disappointed that this place had terrible food. I was mislead by the tripadvisor reviews. I wanted some authentic, flavoursome and delicious Italian.what I got was mass produced slop. The service is impeccable, the ambiance nice - but my appetizer was supermarket food (and was missing most of the elements mentioned on the menu) and my maid pasta... More

Our meal was really special!!the appetizers were excellent!! Very good for vegetarians. Nice place, very intimate and cozy. The service was stiff and not too friendly, one of the waiters kept re- arranging our dishes on the table on a 45 degrees angle despite our attempts to keep them square, she was a bit OCD 😃

Small restaurant with very few tables, so booking is recommended at week ends or during holiday season. The kitchen is tiny, so sometimes there is a rather long waiting time, but...well worth it. The local pasta is fabulous, cooked when ordered- not pre cooked a few hours earlier and then tossed into boiling water at the last minute to heat... More

The restaurant is small, and the chef/owner is omnipresent and dedicated to ensuring a good experience. I experimented with a choice I did not understand, as I sometimes do. It came. I did not like it. I sat there for about 20 seconds looking at it, thinking how I blew it!!!! Bad luck, bad decision. The chef came out. saw... More

I ate there twice during my recent trip to Matera. The food is very reasonably priced and very good quality. The staff were friendly and helpful to none Italian speaking guests.
