lunch with friends

Our friends were very keen to try the Red Lion as they had read glowing reviews. Unfortunately for us the lack of parking was the first disappointment and the car park was full, at 12.30 on a Tuesday. But we were greeted with a friendly welcome and the offer to seat ourselves if wished while we... read more

Well the good points first. Beautiful rooms well equipped and clean with lovely wet room shower and bang & olfeson television nice towels and large bottles of good shower gels and all the other things one needs. Fresh milk and good teas and coffee making facilities. We had come with my sisterand brother in law who has had a successful... More

Despite an enticing menu, we chose the simplest (and most expensive) dish on the menu today at lunch time: a beef chateaubriand. The meat was both tender and tasty, perfectly seasoned and cooked. The chips and salad were crispy. Perfect. The chef didn't try to do something clever, he let the ingredients speak for themselves, showing respect for the producers... More

My husband, our 11 month old baby and I stumbled upon The Red Lion last Sunday after a family drive through Avebury, and we are so glad we did! The pub was beautiful inside - very in-keeping with it's era and it was very comfortable. The staff could not do enough for us and kept coming over to see our... More

Lovely little pub with separate luxury rooms further down the road. Troutbeck guest houses. The Red Lion is a welcoming pub, friendly staff and beautiful outside in their gardens. Walk around and you will encounter hens, Cockerell, herb 🌿 gardens and a lovely seating area. We stayed here for two nights, had an evening meal on Friday which was superb.... More

Great but relaxed service, interesting wine list and some great dishes. Real imagination in the bringing together of ingredients. Will definitely be going again

Meal pleasant in the pub. But do think that the various flavours did not always compliment each other. Unsure why it is a Michelin Star. Waiting pleasant but very ordinary. No finesse which is what i might have expected. In a way the food was presented in a decent fashion but similar to many other places where the price is... More

Its a pub, not a restaurant, so I can see that it will be more relaxed than many places with a star. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Dietry requirements were dealt with without fuss. Offered a drink at the bar or to go straight to table. The table, for two, was very cramped. Other couples were seated at tables well... More

We visited on a Monday night. The setting is good and staff friendly. The menu was limited but seemed OK. The food was good but certainly not exceptional and not worth the price. My wife had fish for both courses and found that in both cases the taste of the fish was lost with both the dressing and the strong... More

We'd gone to the Red Lion for a birthday dinner. The reviews on TripAdvisor had been good and friends had highly recommended it. There were three of us in all, myself, my wife and our ten year old daughter. Maybe it was because we had an early booking, but the service was a bit lax. They weren't especially busy which... More
