We went to Refugio on the advice of a friend from Valencia & had not seen any of the reviews on Tripadvisor. Unfortunately, we chose to go on the day we were leaving & this left us little time to truly enjoy ourselves. The restaurant does not open for lunch until 2.00 pm & we had to wait until the... More

Refugio has it all: creatively delicious food, great atmosphere, friendly staff and value for money. If you have only one day in Valencia, make this restaurant the place for lunch or dinner...if you have more time in this beautiful city, you will want to visit Refugio more than once!

Refugio is in the El Carme district of old town Valencia, tucked into a quiet little street, off the beaten track. With 15-20 tables it can get packed by 10 pm. -- we went around 9, were seated by the chef, who made recommendations on the menu (our selections: rack of lamb, cheeks of fish) and a very astute wine... Went on a Sunday evening. Walked through the Carmen district, stopped for a mojito on the way and got there around 21:30. Interesting food concepts which were well executed. My partner took the starter of potato confit, bacalao and mango, while I had the (very rare) foie gras with black beer caramel and quince ice-cream. Both great. For a main... More

Too fancy dishes for average food. Presentation was good but didn't deliver in flavour. It's overpriced having in mind the restaurant standards, no tablecloth and very tight space. It would have been better having paid 20% less. There are loads of better restaurants in Valencia for those prices and proper ones, with different atmosphere.

While visiting Valencia the last week in December 2012, decided one night, four of us decided to have dinner at Refugio Restaurant located in Barrio del; Carmen in Valencia. The place is truly nonpretentious, just a simple neighborhood restaurant with outstanding fusion mediterranean food. We were the first ones to arrive that evening (9:00 PM) however, the waiter was ready... More

The menu is full of the familiar but with interesting twists. The four of us ordered separately but ended up sharing and commenting on the various courses. So, to give you an idea, the cod, potato and mango (yes mango) starter was everyone's favourite. The duck was superb and again the favourite, however the pork was very good (but the women... More

I went to Refugio with my girlfriend after having read about it here on TripAdvisor. Like other people have mentioned, the looks of this place is nothing special, very informal style. I had the seafood ceviche as a starter and oven baked cod as my main course. The mussels and shrimp in the ceviche tasted good and fresh. The octopus... More

This restaurant looks like nothing special, indeed, it seems pretty run-of-the-mill. Not much room to move, noisy etc....BUT the food is wonderful!! We had the smoked cod starter and then the lamb and pork, finishing with a smoked cheese ice cream. Every dish was excellent, perfectly elaborated and presented. Excellent quantity too, debunking the old myth about good food in... More

I was in Spain for Christmas and I went to this restaurant with some friends and it was a great experience. The guy who owns the place, who was also our waiter, is one of the kindest and funniest persons I've ever known. The food was great. Price is a little high but food and the overall experience really worth... More
