Plate of six tapas

They chose for us and all were very tasty at a very reasonable price. Lovely busy bar just off the plaza mayor that has been in business for 150 years I think it will last a lot longer.

We were advised to try this restaurant but we're concerned that to with the central location it would be a tourist trap... Anything but. The many tapas dishes we ate were exceptional, the house Rioja good and the complimentary liquor at the end was perfect to end the evening! While it is in a central Madrd, just off PlazaMajor, it... Not much to say about this place except best avoided! I saw some reviews advising that this was the best place to eat on Plaza Mayor so as it was handy thought I'd give it a go - mistake. This was probably the worst meal I had in Madrid if not ever, my friend had Veal and it was so... More

Our hotel front desk recommended this restaurant, and I'm happy they did. We enjoyed a great meal on the patio, and experienced crisp, professional service. One caveat: my wife speaks Spanish, which may have made a difference in how quickly and efficiently we were served...it certainly didn't hurt. On departure were were presented a free after-dinner shot of house grapple... More

Great location in the Plaza Mayor but very pushy staff. The tapas were lovely and the sangria too, but the staff let this restaurant down.

We were 10 on a business dinner. We don´t speak spanish and they didn´t speak any english, so the waiter used smartphone and google translate. It worked, but was not very efficient. Dated and not a cosy restaurant, local pub/restaurant with few tourists. Exceptionel food. Splendid Pulpo Gaellica, one of the best entrecote ever and very good and inexpensive vines.... More

We thought the food just average--fish dish uninspiring, veal a bit overcooked. Staff seemed distracted and not particularly attentive. Maybe a bad night.

This is the busiest restaurant I have been to in a long time. No sooner is a table emptied than it is filled in no time. The food is great and you understand why it's a favourite with Madrileños and tourists. However the downside is that service is painful my slow. All said, it's worth the wait!!

How to select among so many restaurants located in one of the most popular / visited place in Madrid? You need a good friend who lives around to help you out ! That was the case and the evening was just massive ! Great welcome followed by high quality service. Food is excellent and choice of wine, excellent. To finish... More

recommended by a colleague who lived in Madrid for years, this is a gem. Suckling pig was spectacular, grilled vegetables were a delight while the wine list was very satisfactory. Service was very good once the waiter realised th a t we loved food. Don't be put off by the fact that it is in a major tourist spot.

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
