A memorable dining experience

Conveniently located in an interior corner of Plaza Major, Los Galayos offered the opportunity to sample Madrid's suckling pig. The suckling pig was so tender that it literally melted in your mouth and so rich that I was challenged to finish it. My wife had the shrimp in garlic and butter that... read more

Most delicious Paella I have ever had. Very nice Resturant that's not touristy. Excellent service. Our tour guide recommended.

We ate here twice service was exceptional the first time almost as good the second. Starters really good calamari and while baby squid tempura chicken pork belly all perfect. Mid range rioja good value choice. Mains homemade burgers paella stone cooked at table steak which was a bit tough however on complaining the manager reduced the cost of that dish... More

This restaurant was recommended as being better than those on Plaza Mayor itself. We ate outside on the sheltered terrace; sheltered but we could still watch the world go by. Having eaten there last year we knew that the food was good and our recollections proved correct. Good food, served by attentive, efficient staff, and complimentary liqueur at the end.... More

I am usually soooooo hesitant ..not just hesitant -- resistant…to eating at a restaurant on a famous square/plaza/piazza that i rebuffed our concierge’s rec to go to Los Galayos on Plaza Major in Madrid --- famous locations usually equal disappointing food, right?… but when the concierge came back to it a second time we decided to give it a try….and... I have tried a few dishes- the cocido, the hueos rotos, and asparagus. all was very good. I especially like the orujo (after dinner drink) they have with peach and spices... yummy.

The people at our hotel recommended this restaurant for us as our tour captain wasn't familiar with any restaurants in Madrid. It was a great recommendation!! It was a lovely restaurant. Our service was excellent and our food was delicious! It was a little pricey, though. I would definitely eat here again!!

We found this place just walking around the area near Plaza Mayor. We liked the look of the menu as it had local specialities like garlic soup and suckling pig. We ate inside to be in a comfortable temperature and the room was lovely. The food and service were excellent - everything was coked perfectly and the suckling pig was... More

They chose for us and all were very tasty at a very reasonable price. Lovely busy bar just off the plaza mayor that has been in business for 150 years I think it will last a lot longer.

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
