very good food and nice ambience

The starters were fantastic (dont miss the fried baby squid with poached egg!!!) and so was the wine....seating was relaxed and the waiters helpful. I've had better Paella in my life though. Heard that this place is noted for its suckling pig but unfortunately we did not try it.

You really have to be observant to find this unique restaurant at a corner of Plaza Mayor. When you get inside you will find an extraordinary restaurant with a history back to 1894. The building itself could been the main reason for visiting the restaurant. But the food and service are also first class. Just choose blindfolded from the menu... More

6 of us had dinner. We had tapas for starters, all good and I had suckling pig for main, which was excellent. Good selection of wines, at reasonable prices. We all had a gin at the end, prepared at your table, complete with dry ice - a great way to end an evening.

The Concierge at our hotel suggested Los Galayos in the corner of Plaza Mayor for a traditional Spanish cuisine so we tried it for lunch. We were seated at a convenient table in a heated terrace were we could watch the action on the street and the plaza. I ordered the "cochinillo asado" which is one of their specialty, and... More

Food was good and staff were very friendly. Despite speaking very little English, service staff are still able to recommend their best dishes. Slightly expensive but worth the price.

On our entrance I accidentally knocked all the plates out of the hands of one of the waiters, whilst holding the door open for a lady. So off the a bad start. But the waiter was so good about it. I would recommend sharing the Croquettes as as starter, huge portion. And they had already given us bread and cheese... More

It's not cheap but for the service, price was reasonable. The suckling pig was really nice. Seafood Paella was good. Much better service than what you get in most bars and roadside restaurants in Madrid.

This is our second visit to Los Galayos and it did not disappoint. Our Cocido Madrileño, which we love in winter, warmed our bones and lifted our spirits. Our choice of wine: Grego was a red wine from Madrid that made the meal come together. The service was nice and attentive. Get there before 2:30 for lunch otherwise it gets... More

We have come to love this restaurant over the years and it was the first place we went to on the day we arrived. We came for lunch and it was full of local people. Service was excellent and the food was not only delicious but beautifully presented. We had fried baby squid and a beautiful dish with artichoke hearts... More

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
