Not your best bet

We just went to this restaurant based on the Frommer's Madrid day by day book. We only went there because it sounded interesting and "traditional". Well the guide book has the address wrong at Calle Mayor, 12. It is actually Calle Mayor, 84. We arrived at 9pm and there were four waiters waiting... read more

We went with local friends that know what to order and how... We ad two starters - Jamon and Callos. For the first you need good material and cutting knowledge and for the second - traditional cooking. Both were great. Then we had different dishes , fish, chicken and meats and I have not a single bad word. It was... More

If you are looking for decent, well prepared spanish food, this is the place to go. Basically you can eat the same dishes as you find in much more expensive restaurants as Casa Lucio, for half the price. The 'crashed eggs' are delicious, as well as the chicken. Excellente value!

This restaurant is one of the finest meals in Madrid; specifically the cold pickled trout. Yes the King of Spain will eat here on occasion. The meals are worth every euro.

Indeed, the location is great at the beginning of the Via Major... Indeed the building and it's history deserve a visit... Indeed you may eat at a table next to a minister or an other madrid celebrity. But the food is just similar to what you will find in most Madid good restaurant for a price that might be a... More

This restaurant was a treat for us as we were looking for traditional Spanish food in a non-tourist setting. This was perfect. We had a veal stew made with fresh tomato sauce, very flavorful, and the salmonetta de roca, which were fresh. We had encountered the canned asparagus at another restaurant so we didn't order that--I'm not sure what prompts... More

Recommended by our hotel owner. Restaurant is a bit dingy and obviously old. It was not busy. We were there at 2100, early in Madrid. We were attended to promptly by a good- natured waiter who clearly has been there for years. He had some recommendations but also indicated a few items were not available. The food was served promptly.... More

I´ve been there with my wite, at lunch time, at a Sunday. Bad idea... It was very well recommended by a very famous book guide (DK). Nothing special! The most famous dish was a very unplesant surprise. A sort of chicken cooked wit azafron. Very expensive and pretentious. To be avoided.

We visited Casa Ciriaco with 13 persons at 07-10-2010. We went there to taste the suckling pig and pastrdges with beans. Both were not available. The food that we had instead was not very special.

I know the "Taverna Círiaco" at least from 20 years and we used to go there to eat everytime we went to Madrid. I can not say exacly how many times but probably more than 30! During this time they have shortened the portions of food and prices rose. Sunday 29 August they had just opened after a 40 days... More

Staying in Chamberi

Neighborhood Profile
Chamberi
Multi-story residential buildings decorated with ornate balconies line the traditional, quiet, and pretty streets of Chamberí. Humble storefronts and neighborhood taverns are scattered across the lower levels down every block, and here and there, there's a cluster of tables on the sidewalk. It isn't ever crowded, but people are always out, poking into the tiny bakeries, hardware stores, and tobacco shops, or ducking into a bright, unadorned cerveceria to have a coffee or beer by the bar, flip through the paper, and check the sports score. The round Plaza Olavide, where the fairly regular network of streets breaks form, is among the most green and lively spots. Restaurants line its circumference and sought-after outdoor tables fill the center of the plaza, where people relax to the sounds of kids playing and street musicians' tunes.
