The Cuchinillo was superior but the service was what really impressed us. The staff, most of whom are Filipino, are charming accommodating and friendly. We opted for the fried chorizo (instead of the usual room temp kind) and it was a winner!

We came across the restuarant by chance as it is tucked away down a stairway off the square at the Opera but so glad we did. The place is very quaint and the food is cooked in a traditional way over a hot kiln oven, with loads of choice we has a whole leg of lamb cooked on the fire... More

An unexpected experience turned out to be unforgettable suckling pig in Madrid, tasty suckling pig, juicy, so flavorfully melted in your mouth, we also order veal, so tender & cooked to perfection; we found this place while walking back to Mayor Plaza from Madrid Royal Palace, staff members were friendly and nice, restaurant has interesting history in which we did... Went to this place with high expectations based on other reviews. Unfortunately we found the experience rather disappointing. Service was efficient but brusque, felt like we got the bare minimum of service. The food was very mediocre - although my friend had a nice steak, that was about it. €80 for 2 courses each and half a carafe of wine.... More

The Ox chop is a challenge but lovely. Recommend the Protos red. Cheap but very nice. Very friendly staff. Nice atmosphere.

My husband and I visited this restaurant twice during our 7 day holiday in Madrid. First visit he was in a mood and sulking and the 2nd visit on our last night. On both visits I had the same thing ; a portion of wood oven roasted Suckling Pig and my husband had the sirloin steak. The suckling pig was... More

I have to admit that I was very sceptic when I eventually accepted, pressed by a group of friends, to go to "El asador real" to eat cochinillo segoviano (suckling pig Segovian style), instead of going to Segovia, due to lack of time. In the past, I never had good cochinillo outside Segovia. But... it was a surprise what we... More

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
