Excellent value, good quality food

There are many cafes in Madrid offering afternoon lunch 3 course menu specials from starting at around 9.50 euro to 12.00 euro. For us the 10 euro lunch menu at this cafe was a cut above the others with respect the food and the service. It was very high quality food, and the service was excellent... read more

I've been to this place over and over again over the past four years. I arrived in Madrid this morning and went to lunch there this afternoon. Their "menu del dia" or lunch specials is the best 10 euros you'll ever spend. You receive a starter, main dish, dessert and drink in the price. Great food and nice staff.

We stumbled across thus little gem during our day. €10 for 3 courses bread and drink is SUPERB value and given the meal was beautiful. Entree - ravioli and paella : Main - curry chicken and breaded veal : Red Wine x 2 = 2 very satisfied customers! No room for dessert/coffee. Atmosphere was excellent and the staff very friendly... Great atmosphere. Friendly staff. Walls covered in memorabilia and photos from an old railway. We met some young Americans working in Madrid who said Sunday night is a regular night there for them.

The food was excellent, the service too. Well placed near Plaza Mayor and Mercado San Miguel. The price for the food and the beer was good.

At the end of our first night in Madrid we were around the Plaza Mayor area and decided for our last few drinks to pop into the Gran Café de Madrid, located on Calle Mayor. It looked more like a traditional pub ( English type ) from the outside and it didn't disappoint inside. The place was a delight and... More

Dropped in by chance returning from the palace to Centro. Great old fashioned bar. Ordered two beers and were given a complimentary bowl of green olives, enjoyed the atmosphere so much we had further beers which were again presented with ham tapas. Well worth a visit.

Simple one menu restaurant which is good for a fast meal BUT food is by far nothing special at all. Much better walk a bit and eat at the market which costs a bit more but much better food. Service was slow to bring the bill even with the house half full.

Very nice atmosphere seems like u have get into time laps and entered to the beginning of 20 th century. The pub about 8 tables. 3 of them are separated with wooden special chairs. Free wifi with good speed. Tasty beer. Few steps the the mercado market to continue your gastronomic trip)

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
