Friendly bar.

I have been in this bar three times now over a period of 2 years. The barman remembered us from the first time we went in, and chatted to us as if we were old friends. We enjoyed a couple of drinks and ate here, the food is ok, I don't know what people expect for the price, it isn't... read more

We have just got back from Madrid and we had lunch at the Gran Cafe a couple of times . Their 10euro lunch menu , I think it is served 12 - 17.00 , is a bargain . Generally a choice of 4 starters and 4 mains , desert/coffee and a drink . The staff were excellent with us with... More

Very disappointing experience. The staff were really unpleasant to us. My husband and I travel internationally about 12 weeks a year. This place came highly recommended. It was an utter disappointment. The food was just average - steak and fish. First, they did not offer us the Pre Fixed menu. We had to ask and when we did the waiter... More

Some people must be very fussy as they really pan this bar. Ok it is small and traditional, but it is what we wanted, 3 draft beers decent wine and a decent selection of food. It wasn't cordon bleu, but that isn't what you expect from tapas. Give it a try.

It the first time we comment food in the internet but it was so bad that we want to warn the others. We use this portal to comment it because they were using stickers "Recommended by Triip Advisor" and to some extension it drove our choice. First of all we want to emphasize that we do not find ourself particularly... More

We had breakfast in the Gran cafe. Every effort was made to serve the breakfast as requested (fussy kids). Price was very reasonable and the food was good

I spent a couple of dinners here to get great inexpensive food and drinks, and watch the world cup. The atmosphere is super cool and relaxed. No one rushes you, or hovers, but they are always ready to serve you and attend to your needs when you need it. This place is in a lovely part of the city as... More

I thought that I should describe how bad the food was our how slow the service was. But instead I say, go out thru the door to the left and then first left. Its about 100 meters and you are at mercado sant miguel. Have a glas of wine or a beer and enjoy cheese, ham, seafood, tapas or whatever... More

Staying in Centro

Neighborhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
