Saturday Lunch

We went last week and managed to get a late reservation at lunchtime. We went for the Sergi Arola taster menu with marching wines which was the middle option of the tasters. Namesake owner-chef Sergi Arola was not in the kitchen the evening we dined, but this disciple of famed Spanish chef Ferran Adria has clearly trained his team well to function at his level when not present. (Arola was away, busy expanding his empire to Turkey, as I recall.) While it would have been a great experience to do the signature... More

We manage to get a reservation at short notice and were the first to arrive (at 9pm). The service felt a little overwhelming until the other guests started coming in and then settled to purely excellent. We had the rating menu and the food was inventive (liquid rice sushi, for instance), tasty and plentiful. There is an exceptional winelist and... More

For one of Ferran Adrià's most famous disciples, Sergi Arola's restaurant, in my opinion, is not serving up food that is nearly imaginative enough. We went for the regular degustation menu, and I have to say that all the appetisers were quite plain. I was expecting to be surprised by various sensations, flavours, textures etc. Now it's hard to remember... More

Just had dinner here on Friday night and had to write about how amazing it was. We were very lucky because the restaurant had a cancellation so got a very last minute booking. The level of service was great and attention to detail with all of the food served was amazing. The menu was creative and the staff really took... More

Wife and i had the Sergi Arola tasting menu with wine pairing. It was an amazing experience. Service, food, and wine were impeccable. Some reviewers were disappointed that Sergi was under construction; construction is now over, go to this restaurant.

We had lunch at Sergi Arola and it is worth very penny. Ambience was very avant garde , background music was well chosen. Every dish did not disappoint, from the tapas to the petit fours, each was well presented. But it was the complement of different flavours in each dish which was exciting. The chef has borrowed techniques and flavours... More

When we arrived we were greeted by a gentleman outside who confirmed our reservation then welcomed us in to a tastefully decorated and small restaurant. The food was of the molecular gastronomy sort: unusual combination of foods and ingredients. Each course was an exotic creation with outstanding presentation including tremendous attention to detail. The staff was very friendly and helpful... More

Excellent meal, amazing presentation, and after a rough start by not being acknowledged at all for several minutes after entering, very personable service. The upstairs Sergi Arola Gastro is apparently closed until April 2015 so when we offered a table at his more casual downstairs SOT, we decided to give it a try. A very comfortable, well designed and appointed... More

Staying in Chamberi

Neighborhood Profile
Chamberi
Multi-story residential buildings decorated with ornate balconies line the traditional, quiet, and pretty streets of Chamberí. Humble storefronts and neighborhood taverns are scattered across the lower levels down every block, and here and there, there's a cluster of tables on the sidewalk. It isn't ever crowded, but people are always out, poking into the tiny bakeries, hardware stores, and tobacco shops, or ducking into a bright, unadorned cerveceria to have a coffee or beer by the bar, flip through the paper, and check the sports score. The round Plaza Olavide, where the fairly regular network of streets breaks form, is among the most green and lively spots. Restaurants line its circumference and sought-after outdoor tables fill the center of the plaza, where people relax to the sounds of kids playing and street musicians' tunes.
