Rip-off

Very pricey. 4,50 for a medium beer or a "tinto de verano". 20 eur for a plate of ham. A simple tapas spread for 3 came to 100 euros. I live in Madrid and won't be going back to this place.

This was our 'local' bar during our stay. The drinks WERE expensive but we were really well looked after by the 2 ladies who ran the place . You run the risk of being knocked off your chair by one or the many buses or cars which negotiate the very tight corner into the street but after a while you... More

Town was busy and this was the only bar we found a free table outside. We ordered wine, beer and soft drinks. The price was higher than most other places. Move on.

We were looking for a place to eat on our last night in Madrid and saw that this place was packed with people so thought it would be a great option. It wasn't until after we sat down and ordered drinks that we realized it was more of a bar than a tapas place. The waiter ensured us that they... More

Dropped by for a beer as it was hot and we were there - wish we'd read some reviews. Poor service and high prices, and looks like they don't care. Perhaps we ought to have checked prices first, or checked after, but its not in a place you'd expect to be expensive (€4.50 for a medium beer) and you seem... More

I've been in this place and we decided to have a beer to celebrate our freshly started Madrid trip!! The place is overpriced, the posturing in good and the waitress looks like not into her job. I suggest to move along the Huertas in both directions (paseo del Prado and Plaza deal Angel) to find much better solutions.

Me and my girlfriend were having a walk in the center of Madrid when we decided to take something to drink. She lives in Madrid and she likes this neighbourhood, so we went to Plaza Matute, n.3 because it seemed to be a chilly place, so we sat at the first bar, that was full of people. After a long... I genuinenly had to double check I had noted the name down and I had the right place, as we came here a couple of times due to it being next to our flat - although the woman serving could maybe smile and you do have to ask a couple of times for the bill (did this most times in... More

Terrible, we had four beers and a plate of ham, and we had to pay 31 euro. Ridiculous, especially for madrid.

We should have read all the bad reviews before going there but now we also walked into this tourist trap. We are living in Madrid for two years now and usually you don't have to have a look into the menu if you just want to order some wine, beer or coffee. At first we found it almost funny that... More

Staying in Huertas

Neighborhood Profile
Huertas
Also known as Barrio de las Letras, Huertas was once home to prominent literary figures, Miguel de Cervantes and Lope de Vega among them. The neighborhood is committed to celebrating its rich heritage: Calle Huertas itself is inlaid with quotes from celebrated authors, street names pay homage to them, and second-hand bookshops pervade. Huertas receives a fair amount of spillover from the center — side streets around Plaza Santa Ana take on a foreign party atmosphere at night, and you always see young backpackers navigating the streets — but as you descend into the neighborhood, everything becomes a little more cramped and slightly less refined, and takes on more of an underground feel. Live music is at the heart of Huertas: by night, its subdued bars are ideal for meeting friends, sipping cocktails, and chatting quietly while enjoying jazz or singer-songwriter performances.
