If you're in Madrid long enough to get even one dinner, Gastromaquia is a MUST! Make sure to make a reservation ahead of time. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They'll let you know how much to order and provide suggestions. I lived in Madrid for four months and this is by far the best food I have eaten... More

After four months of living in Madrid, I can easily say that this is my favorite and "go to" restaurant in Madrid. These are not your typical tapas that you can get at every other restaurant in Madrid- these are creative, tasty, and unique tapas. I have been here four times and have had most of the items on the... More

My husband and I ate at Gastromaquia on our last night in Madrid, in July 2014, and we still can't stop wishing that we hadn't discovered it earlier. We still crave the salmorejo and the amazing free range pork skewers (and we aren't even big pork fans - so glad Hugo convinced us to try them!) that we had -... More

My family went one night as my sister lives in Madrid and loves this place. The only downside is that it is more expensive so it is not a place she can frequent (although she wishes she could!). Out of our nine days in Spain, this was one of my favorite restaurants. It is not your average tapas experience. The... More

We stubmled upon this small restaurant on a friday and were very lucky. There was a table for 2, but soon after we sat the restaurant was completely full. I strongly recommend making a reservation as it is very popular. You can eat from 8.30 or from 10.30. The food was great, staff nice and fast and the prices were... More

The food is amazing and the wait staff was very helpful, but the servers all seemed to be confused about who to bring food too. We waited a really long time (even by Spanish standards). However, they were very nice and accommodated us without a reservation.

We arrived at 8.50pm and took the last available table. Throughout the time we were there the staff had to consistently turn people away. We didn't know where to start with the menu choices! There was such a variety to choose from. Our waitress was incredibly helpful & took the time to make suggestions for us. We were not disappointed.... More

Gastromaquia serves very tasty food in a pared down but still attractive environment. The goats cheese starter, with honey and olive oil was special. The fried octopus smaller portion was also excellent and nicely presented. The key lime pie was beyond tart, but for me that sharpness was ok. The drink wasvbottlrd water. The old trick of putting unsolicited bread... More

Staying in Chueca

Neighborhood Profile
Chueca
Chueca is the hip, gay neighborhood of Madrid where many of the streets are narrow and intimate, but where the hustle and bustle and the eclectic storefronts and people give it a distinctly urban feel. The main thoroughfare is Calle Hortaleza and the main square is Plaza Chueca, completely filled with terraza tables serving copas (mixed drinks) during summer. A mixture of trendy and grungy, some of the adult businesses here are explicitly racy in their signage. From the rainbow flags to the signs above the entrances of its many funky bars, to the date spot restaurants, Chueca is a vibrant and colorful place. It's always interesting to explore the different corners of Chueca by day, and by night, the area becomes a major nightlife destination when the clubs open their doors.
